Just an interesting observation about trapping Tilapia. In my nursery pond I have only CNBG and Tilapia. The way I harvest both is with traps. The traps I use are rectangular wire mesh with openings on all four sides. The traps are about 2' x 3' with a compartment in the center for bait. A friend gave me an old handmade trap that was made of wire mesh. It is about 2' x 3' and has only one funnel shaped opening on top. I tried the old trap to see if it would work. To my surprise it caught only large Tilapia. After six trap runs the old trap will average 10 Tilapia in the the 6 to 10" size. Only 6 small Tilapia and four small CNBG have been caught in the six runs. The same bait is used in all traps (dog bisquits).

In the regular traps I normally catch a mixture of both species and a mixture of sizes. It is rare to catch more than two large Tilapia in one regular trap.

Don't know why, but thought it was interesting.
