I think that if you want to get a kid hooked on bass fishing, take them out when the bass are hitting top water lures. Even when the bass "misses", the kid still gets some excitement. (Of course, adults should ALSO find that exciting.)

I remember my father taking me out under those conditions when I was pretty young. Sometimes I missed fish because the bass hit the lure so hard that it was knocked into the air, and when I set the hook the lure came straight back at me.

Learning patience as an excited youth is definitely a valuable life skill, and it was darn tough for me to wait long enough to feel some solid weight on the line before setting the hook after I had just witnessed an explosive splash surrounding my lure!
