IMO it's a testament to the importance of gape capability especially in fisheries where forage base consists largely of BG. The larger WE could have accommodated a 3" BG - the smaller WE no chance. Once fish hit that magic gape size, they really seem to turn the corner in this fishery.
This exactly reflects my emerging experience with WE as sunfish control, probably takes two or more years to get to a size where they can really contribute. It may be possible to have a "balanced" BG/SMB fishery....if there are plenty of WE to assist.
