Is your water clearer now that it's cooled down? I'm wondering if the (zooplankton) you saw with the IR was present, but not observable, when it was warmer (easier to see peas in thin soup than in stew), or if it's a Winter species that was not there before. I remember Bill Cody talking about how phytoplankton & algae differ Winter vs. Summer; I suspect zooplankton changes with the seasons also.
