Nutrients are like vitamins...good in moderation, but if excessive they can actually make things worse. Something in the BOW will try to utilize those nutrients, and that's usually in the form of advanced plant or algae growth. More work or expense for the pondowner trying to manage the BOW.
The hatchet idea would be quick and easy.
