Fish ID

Hey guys. I loved all of the responses to my last fish ID. Take a look at this one and tell me what you think. I caught it out of the same body of water. No history of what has been stocked.

Got me stumped. I originally thought maybe a Redbreast or Longear, but after Googling pictures of both, I don't think its either one of them. Maybe a hybrid of something. Not sure!

Kind of stumped me also. Did you see my last fish ID post? This reservoir is really strange. It is 6 acres, built up on a hill, it literally looks like a giant mound, has 12 aerators running in it, and we catch some really odd hybrids. We catch a lot of regular bluegill but about half of them you can tell are hybridized. I was just curious what everyone thought. Thanks for your response.

Could be the offspring of 2 separate hybrids, giving it traits of 4 different species (if possible?). Pretty cool, either way.

No idea but a really beautiful fish.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

airborne,

If the hybrid is an F1, I think I see one of the parents. The parent I think is most strongly reflected is Longear sunfish. I base that on the length of the ear tab, the ear tab's white margin and the strong display of orange through out the body. The abrupt increase in slope just behind the head of the fish is also another indicator but this feature in this fish is not so profoundly observable as it is in pure LES.

It is clearly a hybrid to me but the problem is what is the other side of the cross (if in fact it is F1). I blew the photo up to examine the ear tab in greater detail because I thought I could see orange/red in the South-East margin of the ear tab. After expanding the image ... it seemed to be there and it seemed to be less prevalent. I had hope to see it more clearly. But if there was an orange/red spot on the east side of the ear-tab ... Then I lean toward PKS or RES for the other side. If orange/red spot were due east and very bright I might lean toward PKS but I thought I saw it in the South-East and it wasn't very strongly expressed in the photo ... so I will lean toward RES.

If forced to guess from the photo, I would suggest an LES sire and RES dam based on my inferences of the above described observations of the photo provided. In the end, though, I'm with Dave. Don't know but its a pretty fish.

I'm glad to see somebody ask about that one because i had a spawn two weeks ago of the exact same fish. I never stocked anything that looked like it.

I will say this from the looks of spawn there is going to be a lot more of them.
