Fish ID
Here are three pics of some minnows or YOY that I pulled out of a ditch next to my house. The ditch is a typical farm drainage ditch that drys up at certain times of the year. I lowered the water yesterday and these guys were flopping on the banks.
Are they minnows or are they YOY and what type?
Thanks for all of the ID help lately.

I believe those are mud minnows. There are a couple of different species. I bet CJ could tell you exactly which species you got there.

After a quick Google search, they look like a Central Mud Minnow.

Agreed.......mud minnows....Big ole redfish like them as well. We catch these in the creeks in South Houston. Some species can tolerate low oxygen fresh and brackish water. Hardy rascals.
...when in doubt...set the hook...

We call then cockahoe minnows in SE La. and fish with them in the saltwater marshes. Hardy? yes. I forgot about them in the livewell of my bota without the pump running in one inch of water then found them alive the next week when I went fishing again. However, that was wintertime. The same thing happened in summertime and I could smell the stench when I got 20 ft from the boat. I figure the water temp was the difference

The fish you guys are thinking of that you use for bait in saltwater are not mudminnows. Though mudminnows look similar. You're thinking of mummichogs or bull minnows. They are a member of the killifish family. Mudminnows are actually closely related to pike and pickerel...
