As many, I've assumed that "Georgia Giants" are basically a green sunfish X bluegill hybrid, and have even been told this by others. However, a friend has them in his pond, and he remarked that they have a red spot on the posterior edge of the operculum. I'm assuming that this means they have some redear (Lepomis microlophus) or pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus) in them. Or maybe somehow the friend got redear X bluegill hybrids instead. Any thoughts?

I've always wondered how Ken could get a patent on the cross if they are simply bluegill X greensunfish, as that is a commonly produced hybrid. As far as I know, the patent office will not grant a patent for a duplication. Adding the redear or pumpkinseed could be the reason.

I've emailed Ken asking about his hybrid bluegills and crappies with no response.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Hey Cecil, I have 9 month old Georgia Giants in my middle Georgia pond. They were 1-2 inches when stocked and are now 7-71/2 inches. They also have the red spot. As to the patent the web site states a registration at the U. S. patent office. My guess is that is a name registration not a patent. As to Ken, I have met him three times picking up fish and he does not seem like the e-mail type. Ken has told me to my face his hybrids are not the standard cross. I have a request Cecil, call Ken and ask him about Georgia Giants. You have the expertise to ask the right questions. Then post your opinions of both Ken and Georgia Giants. Thanks
