When sinking brush piles like christmas trees, cedars stuffed into a bucket, bamboo, etc would it be more beneficial to try to stand the pile up or lay it down?

Stand it up, if you can. But, having more than one tree in a bundle is more important. Ideally, if you can stand up six or seven Christmas trees together, you get the best effect.

It depends on your objective . For shallow water <4ft which will be used for BG or bait fish hiding and feeding laying down is best. However for deeper water >5ft brush piles for attracting predators and for fishing for them stand up is better , in groups. Even properly done it is hard to stand them up on steep slopes (underwater part of dam or points) so other methods may be better than plain buckets.
