Actually, I lost 2 out of 3. Hot weather, wind and no rain combined to kill new wheat/oats in 2 places. In the plot in front of my trailer house (about 2 acres) I have a little bit left in shady areas. A 7 or 8 acre spot still looks good but when I dig down I don't find much moisture. We have 50% chance of scattered showers during the next couple of days so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

DD,
Those kind of happenings always make me wonder how it must feel if you actually depended on that "crop" like many farmers. I really admire those guys...they take great risks for sometimes little gain....but maybe the biggest gain is a lifestyle that has few peers.
Speaking of that, it's Monday morning everywhere, but on the ranch it is just another day in paradise...now a full time rancher, pond meister, and general hell raiser!

Did somebody call it quits? Give up the corner office? Say to heck with it I'm going fishing?

I know the feeling DD. I put out 150# of winter peas and nearest the house, I've been watering. Even with a sprinkler, it is having a hard time sprouting. I had a whole milo crop not make it this year, luckily the Johnson grass did well enough to keep some pheasants around. If it weren't for my deer feeders, I don't know if I'd be seeing any deer this year.

So, can it be...has ML pulled the golden trigger? Speaking of that, it's Monday morning everywhere, but on the ranch it is just another day in paradise...now a full time rancher, pond meister, and general hell raiser! When I hooked up with ML and Burgermeister this last June, ML "hinted" at the aforementioned plan. Sure sounds like it came together in fine fashion. Yee-haw! Bring on the straw hat, cane-poe, and Maxwell House coffee-can full o'night crawlers.

Sorry to hear it Dave. It may sound dumb but I try to remember to remind myself that we have to go through times like these so we will truly apreciate & stop taking for granted, the good times.

Ric, we are in an 8 year drought and I never take rain for granted. I built my main pond by the house the year before the drought began. We got a big rain, it filled/overflowed and I stocked fish. It hasn't come close to filling since. This Saturday, I will be taking my Grandsons Cub Scout Den to clean out as many of the remaining 18-20 CC as possible. It is down from 1 acre to maybe 1/3 acre and the cats have just about cleaned out the BG. Only 2 of the 6 kids have ever been fishing and I consider this a privelege and an opportunity. The forecast for Saturday is for possible rain and, gotta admit, I have mixed emotions about it. My wife says I'm nuts and I guess I have an odd value system.

I guess you could say "it all depends"...more like "that's the plan man". House in Houston for sale. Corner office is empty, Trialsguy. Brettski, pulled the golden trigger (for the third time) last Wednesday and except for some special project consulting, it's green acres is the place to be, farm living is the life for me. The zone was easy to find, Dwight. Burger, you will have to come to the ranch to get your sinking feed in Dec. Maybe do some close up observation of water turkeys and catch a rainbow trout.

ML, you obviously have internet access at your ranch, right?

DD,
I hate to hear about the food plots (for you and the deer), whta a waste. Are you going to try and replant? We put out about 400lbs of seed yesterday. I'm holding out hope for fall rains...

However, with three ponds to build (two currently in work), land to clear, a garage apartment to build, and fish to grow and catch, my internet time will be substantially less. As the Duke used to say...we're burning daylight...time to get busy.

DD maybe some rain now will get you some winter grass/food. ML here's to a quick house sale and an easy transition to the well earned "good life". Notice I did not say less work.

Happiness lies in being privileged to work hard for long hours in doing whatever you think is worth doing. One man may find happiness in supporting a wife and children. Another may find it in robbing banks. Still another may labor mightily for years in pursuing pure research with no discernible result. Note the individual and subjective nature of each case. No two are alike and there is no reason to expect them to be. Each man or woman must find for himself or herself that occupation in which hard work and long hours make him or her happy. Contrariwise, if you are looking for shorter hours and longer vacations and early retirement, you are in the wrong job. Perhaps you need to take up bank robbing. Or geeking in a sideshow. Or even politics. -Robert A. Heinlein Here's hoping we can all work happily!

Gator, I might replant. This will be either 4 or 5 years that I've been dried out.
Dave, I won't lose everything. It is still about 8+ ft. in the bowl. Thus, I really won't know what is in there unless it drops more. I'm just not sure about more cats. I like them if only to see them Hoover feed off the top.
BTW, a bunch of the area got really good rains today. I got a bunch here in the D/FW metroplex. It seems to have gone just South of my rural property. No help for the fish.

Theo - That Robert A. Heinlein quote is a favorite of mine. I was once in a wrong job. I considered bank robbing and the geek deal, but never politics!

Dave, 8 yrs! I can’t imagine. Droughts around here are measured in weeks. I was thinking this was the first year without rain. It’s a flaw in my character to try to encourage someone while believing I understand their sit. but obviously don’t. BTW, our wives know us better than we like to admit & I have always admired your sense of values. Only 2 of the 6 kids have ever been fishing and I consider this a privelege and an opportunity. Tell me that’s not admirable. I apologize but I have to say it … when my hopes & dreams are pushed back I search hard to find at least a pewter lining in the cloud. It keeps it bearable. I truly hope things turn your way soon.
