1. What depth of water do bluegill spawn in. I've heard they spawn in 4-5 feet of water, but my pond has many beds at two feet or so.
2. When not spawning, what depth do bluegill hang out in.
3. In middle Mississippi, is a max pond depth (3.5 acre pond) of 10 feet too shallow. I've heard anything over 10 is overkill.
4. Have now fished two weekends for bass. Have caught quite a few, but am noticing a trend. I've caught three different bass (I threw them all out because they were small) that had a white spot in their right eye. Looked alomst as if the fish was blind, althought the spot didn't entirely cover the eye. Was definitely inside the eye. Any thoughts on what this was. My pond was stocked 4 years ago, so it appears this may be a genetic issue.

Stony, my BG spawn in anything from one to 3 ft. and can usually be caught in 2 to 6 ft. of water.

Lots of people say that anything over 10 ft. is overkill but it depends on your area. In my arid area, 10 ft. can become high and dry during summer. It is hard to have too much depth during a drought. If you have dependable rainfall with good runoff, 10 ft. should be just fine.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Stony:

I've no clue on the "why" of the blind fish, however my old pal always says those're the only fish I can catch...blind or stupid. Did they look dumb?

Just hadda ask.

I caught two Rio Grande Cichlids and placed them in an aquarium years ago, and was able to watch them for 2 years. They started out with some tiny white worms growing inside the eye which eventually turned into a mass of tiny white worms. If you look really really closely you may be able to notice if your fish are suffering from the same parasite.
