Ever wonder what your pond is really shaped like? I have, for 4 1/2 years - not anymore. My wonderful wife found the following pic on our county's website, and was thoughtful enough to Email me the URL at work (then the website went down for 4 days, and we couldn't get the pics again until late last night). I now know that my pond looks like: a Christmas stocking that Santa Claus dropped a large steel ball bearing in. I have never exhibited better genius or luck than when I talked her into marrying me. I will check with her tonight and see if there are any useful secrets to finding the pic; if so I will share. Until then, HERE'S MY POND: We also got a whole view of the farm, roughly outlined in red, that let me know my proposed 2nd pond site (in green) is bigger than I thought it was going to be, perhaps 1/3 to 1/2 acre:

Theo, Have you been unable to dial in a pic off of www.usgs.gov using their terra-server? Or the other, which is v cool if the color pics are available for your area, is google earth. Anyway, nice sock dude....wish I had one (or perhaps a pair?) Actually, I saw a profile of a lamb's or young bull's head.

Brettski:
These shots are the best I've seen of the farm, other than some commercial & private aerial photos we have from before the pond went in. I've been able to find some color (satellite) photos of the place before, but the resolution wasn't this good. And we also looked at (IIRC) google earth, where the hi-res section ended about 4-5 miles from us - we were pretty vague.

yeah, seems that the google earth is spotty for hi-res photos, let alone color....but....I have had v good success with terra-server for close up pix in B&W across the country. I'm surprised you can't score there. terra-server link (edit: ah....lightnin bolt...never mind me, I'll be alright. If the pond is fairly new within the past few years, you're outta luck with T-S)

Great looking pond from the air, Theo. Iowa has a pretty good website for aerial views of iowa. Here is a 2002 pic of the ponds in which I have been near the edge and back...... The ponds show up quite good in these color-infrared photos. I love looking at aerials of the various looking ponds. I tend to like ponds that have their own character and aren't the boring fishbowl look.
To Dam or not to dam That isn't even a question
