I was surprised to see LMB spawning today. Or at least preparing to.
Is the one tagged with the chartreuse floy tag a male of female?
I've watched several videos on spawning behavior and can't decide.
The current moon phase is a Waxing Crescent but I'm pretty sure the combination of rising water and the temperature change has triggered my second LMB spawn.

Usually, the larger fish is the female. The male makes the nest and guards the female swims over and drops eggs that are fertilized by the male who stays and guards. Often one nest may have eggs from several females.

Thanks, the original is much clearer than the video uploaded and I'm pretty sure after watching this video and several others that the tagged one is a Male. It remains on the nest chasing the other smaller ones away, the larger one eventually swims away.
It's very interesting, he even opens his mouth several times in a display of aggression while chasing them away.
Some of the smaller ones swim in and attempt to make deposits in the nest.
That same night we received 4 inches of rain and the pond rose over 3 feet. I wonder if that will still be a productive nest?
