It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Welcome - There is a whole lot to learn about pond mgmt especially if you are a first time pond owner. It is a lot more about adding fish and fishing for them. IMO you would be wise to subscribe to Pond Boss magazine. It has lots of good pond management information and well worth the dollars.
What are your goals for having a pond??? One you define the goals then there are definite types of ways to manage it to achieve those goals.

My goals are/were to turn a wasteland (right-away) into something more appealing and enhance the wildlife. We have a lot of wildlife around and I enjoy viewing and having them around. To be honest, I found out how much I missed have the pond orchestra. It just being there is enough for now tho I'm considering stocking some FHM in the Spring. Right now the bullfrog and tadpole population is unreal! I plan on documenting the process here in a thread and open to comment/critique. I'd like to limit the critique to what I can do in the future, not a change to what has already been done.

If you've already got water in the pond, you can stock fatheads now just for the joy of stocking.

For Fathead minnows, the conventional thought process is to put them in ahead of any other fish so they can spawn for several cycles and get thickly populated before you add other fish.
At a water temp of approx 70 degrees or higher, a given fathead spawns every two weeks.
As such, a Fall stocking may not gain you any additional fathead spawn before Summer '25.
However, stocking fish is pure joy, and there's no harm to spend a few hundred gold smoullions to load up the pond with fatheads. Plus, they will start hitting feed right away.

You don't even have to spend a few hundred. You could get dozens from a bait store, but if you do that, make sure you're good at identifying fish to make sure you're not getting some kind of unwanted species from a bait store.
