If you can store non-gasoline for 3-6 months before it starts to degrade, and you can extend that to a year or two with fuel stabilizers, and E10 for half of that time (or less) how and for how long do they store gasoline in the National Gasoline Reserves? (and what type/octane rating of gasoline do they store in the Reserves?)

Maybe they store it in a vacuum where no oxygen present?

I can answer that Scott... It's 100LL Av Gas (94 RON) and diesel is just that, Diesel.
We add 100LL as stabilizer to any gasoline type at 20% of volume. Airplane can sit for 10 years and fuel is still good.
Some smaller piston aircraft are STC'd for 87 Octane. These will last 8-10 years if mixed with 25% 100LL.
100LL is more highly refined, has considerably less lubricity and is anti-microbial in nature-it stabilizes itself.
Any non Av grade gas begins to break down on day 2 with exposure to the elements, mainly O2. Moisture plays a part as well, microbials live in car gas and Kerosene, over time it grows algal organisms and sours quickly. I'm getting too deep here :-))

Thanks!! So if that's the case, then they have to re-refine it to get the lead out if the gasoline were ever to be used for the general public?

I run 100 LL in my chainsaws and have 0 issues, no matter how hot or cold it is out, and I also don't have to worry about ethanol either.

There are 2 specific formulations used as an additive to enhance lubricity, which also lowers effective octane.
To be used as general fuel, the additive packages are mixed with 100LL and 87 Octane auto fuel.
We can use this in Turbine aircraft if we mix 1oz of 2 stroke oil per 45 gal fuel. Hard to believe that 1oz per 45 gal is enough to lube fuel control drive shaft ($85,000 unit per engine) but it does.
