As the pond gets lower and lower the bank is getting longer and longer. I'm looking at it thinking why not go in with a skidsteer and take the top foot or so off.

I'll try to post a drawing of what I'm thinking. Basically the bank is around 15 foot long and I would scrape out from the water's edge towards the steeper part of the bank. Would this hurt anything, help, or be a net neutral?

Your big pond is fairly old, isn't it?

I suspect you have plenty of fertility in the pond. Scraping out part of your shallow shoreline should slightly reduce plant growth and FA growth in the future under the theory that the faster the shore goes to deep water the better.

The downside might be if you do long stretches of the shoreline at the same time. A frog-strangler rain on newly exposed pond bottom might wash a lot of silt and muck into your deeper areas and get the water column pretty turbid for a while.

If enough of the muck was organic matter that began to oxidize, then I think you could have a chance for a fish kill in the worst case scenario.

Maybe do some small bites and see how it goes. You could probably over-seed with rye, or even rice or millet and have some cover crop come up fast that will later disappear when your pond goes back to full pool level?

Guessing the skid steer will sink even if it's been dry for awhile.

Oh the nightmare of sunk machinery, and the chance of fish kill! Neither sounds fun!

If it's an older pond, that will help remove nutrients and organic matter that has accumulated. The downside is that if the pond has a compacted clay liner, you don't want to disturb that liner.
