Does anyone run a filter or waterfall for their pond in a colder climate?

I'm wondering if I need to run the supply pipes at 4ft depth and what would I do about a pump box if I dont want to work about talking it out during the winter, will that be 4 feet deep too? I'm wondering what a deep pump box might look like or how it would be constructed.

We have an above ground box for the pressure tank and hot water heater for the water system at our horse barn. It is sealed (during Winter) and insulated. During mild cold weather (most of our Winter days have just above freezing highs and lows in the 20's) the waste heat from the hot water tank keeps eat above 40 degrees inside. When It's really cold, I have an external switch to turn on a 1500W (set to 1350W) milk house heater inside, the thermostat of which is set to the mid 60's. The water line from the well (with submersible pump) runs up from below the frost line to the inside of the box.

With more insulation, you might be able to do something similar in NY.

Another option:

Place a valve at the lowest point in the system. Blow it out with air every fall.

It takes me about 5" of work to purge my irrigation system each year. Turn off the water supply. Open a valve to atmosphere on the high side. Open the drain valve. Let the system gravity drain for about 20". Tie on compressor tank to high side and blow the system out twice.

I am sure there is a little water remaining in the system. However, I have never suffered a break, even when it went to -18F in Feb. 2021.
