Significantly restricting sunlight getting into the pond or lake has to have a measurable affect on the productivity.. To expand on his comment, I have not seen these utilized for "ponds". Instead they are generally used for open-air freshwater reservoirs that are primarily a source of water for human consumption. I would expect that reducing algae growth is considered a benefit in these applications.
