Checked out my neighbor Lee's pond today.

Water temps were about 41 degrees. Saw hundreds of fatheads active around shallow rock piles and many of them were nibbling on the floating feed I threw out.

No sightings of bluegill, SMB, HSB, YP, or CC.

There has only been a couple of times this whole winter that I didn't get at least a few BG to come up and some feed. I've seen them knock small pieces of ice out of the way to get to the feed. They have never feed like this during winter before.

Do you think you have created a self-reinforcing cycle?

The more you see them eat, then the more likely you are to feed them, then the more likely they are to be lingering around the feeding spot around chow time?

Just wondering if getting a little extra feed in them during winter helps them survive subsequent stress events later in the year?

All I can say for sure is that I enjoy feeding them.lol!
I hope feeding them over the winter will help them.
What is funny is yesterday it was 55 degrees and fairly sunny, I only had a few fish come up. Today it was 24 degrees and no sun, I had a bunch of them hitting it hard. lol!

And then there was one! at least we appear to be making progress! makes you wonder if that one will see a pattern and warn his friends that this may not be the perfect feeding grounds?

Finally getting enough rain to start the pond rising some…. Still 2’ low
So much sand that a slow rain won’t do it until water table comes up to allow spring to run . And I have over a hundred acres of land around that drains into pond……

I turned off the aerator today, we are supposed to have 10 or so days above freezing during the daytime, so I don't think I need it.

No cormorants, though I did see a pair of geese and a great blue heron. Refilled feeders & cleaned one out after water seeped in during intense rainstorms. Replaced battery.

Delighted to observe pond now at full pool! Far cry from 2 to 3 feet low just a few weeks ago, thought I might go into summer still short of water. Water still not running out of standpipe, but must be very close.

No apparent activity, other than the geese, when feeders went off. Hopefully that will change as it warms up. Next visit I'll look at forage pond to see if there's enough water to raise some BG.

I went bluegill fishing using worms and caught what I believe is a golden shiner. I didn't purposefully put any of them in there. It may have been about 5 inches long and after now seeing it, I think I was seeing a small school of them late last summer while I was feeding. They never would come close to the dock so I never get a good look at them.

I hope they are beneficial and don't become invasive. I have grass carp, bluegill, largemouth bass, channel cats, black crappie, fathead minnows and red ear. (at least that's what I stocked last year.) I don't think any of my fish, except for the channel cats, are large enough yet to eat the size of the minnow I caught.

The bass will love them come summertime when they are big enough to start eating them. Post a picture of the fish you caught if you have one.

Went to pond today and bg were active eating surface bugs…. We just had 4 days of below freezing temperatures all day and nite thought that was odd that water has to be cold and yet they were active

It was close to 75 degrees in S.W. PA yesterday.

Water temps near the surface were close to 50 degrees as we've had some warmer days leading up to yesterday.

I soaked and threw some feed, and after about 5-10 minutes, Golden Shiners of various adult sizes started to feed.

Went down and fired up the generator for 5 hours to run the aeration. Have about 20" of ice on er. Forecast is looking gnarly next week, -30 again for a bit. Been in the mid to low 30's for a while but with a stiff 30 mph wind. No melting going on around here. Snow on the ground with more to come it looks like....

We are south for the winter till mid April so only report I can give on the ponds is what my daughter tells us when she checks on the house. She said we finally got big enough rains for some runoff and the main pond has risen. Not to the overflow yet but at least gained significant water.

Last year was a drought year for us like many others. It was not a total burn up year, although crop yields were significantly lower, but the rains we got were small enough to not really have any runoff to add any to the ponds. So they just kept going down, down, down with evaporation. They reached nearly two feet low. I had not seen them that low since they were originally built and were initially filling.

I was glad to hear the water levels were up. Our house live cameras show the pond but not in enough detail to tell for sure just how full. But I can see the floating dock is floating a little higher. A wet spring is tough on the farmers, but it sure could help my ponds.

I noticed my fish feeding at the surface yesterday afternoon. I went out there with a pint of Optimal pellets and the fish were all over that stuff.

I've placed another seven loader buckets full of limestone cobble into the pond over the past couple weeks. I've got about that much left on
pile that still needs to go in. I'm going to be really happy when I'm finished with that.

I saw a pair of muskrats casing the joint Saturday evening. I got out there early Sunday morning and waited on them with Mr. Ruger, but
they didn't come out to play. Haven't seen them since so maybe they decided all of that riprap on the dam is too much for them to tame.

Augie , we are seeing the same thing on feeding fish here in MILLER COUNTY Missouri , of course we have been feeding the trout since NOV 2022 and have been catching the BG ,LMB and CC off and on this winter so I knew they were feeding with the trout but now for the most part you can tell the little nibblers are up in the water column and getting more active with these 60 degree days , I have had an OH CRAP moment though with the rising temps, I am now see FA starting to appear. So in the words of BOB LUSK , I am paying the dumb tax now , the trout were sure cool but they eat and the by product is now showing up all over the place, this will be the 2nd year pond and no pond weeds to speak of so a clean slate for Algae to spread like wild fire

What have you been catching your big LMB on this winter?

I rarely/never fish this time of year, but could use a break from grinding work if some good fun is possible.

I use a 3-1/2” big bite cane thumper on a 1/4oz owner flashy swimmer in pearl color …. These things are killer year round. I have caught 3 over 10# from 3 ponds around me and untold 5-8 lb LMB
