I'm curious as to what visibility it takes to deter Comarants from visiting an East Texas pond, or does it even matter? I can treat my pond accordingly, it's roughly 3 acres. I've used both Alum and Gypsum so applying it isn't a concern.

Generally, I have roughly 8"-12" visibility. I have Gypsum on hand to treat it regarding clarity.

Looking for advice on what works for others with the bs protected birds.

Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

No idea about visibility. I’ve used cord stretched across the pond to t posts about 16 inches above the water. It worked the first year. However, the next year I wound up in serious surgery that kept me from lowering them after the water levels dropped. They got under them and just about cleaned me out.

Hogs and deer bump into the cords and break them. Drought drops the water level enough to let the birds under it. Get a big rain and the cords have to be raised and retired.

I’m finally healthy enough to tackle it and keep up with it. Will definitely be restocking bluegills and fathead minnows in a couple of months.

They won’t be protected if I see one.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

If you search back in the forum's past (> 10 years) you can find a lot of discussion on cormorants, aka water turkeys.

Water turkeys can stay under water a pretty long time. They don't stand on the bank and feed like a Great Blue Heron. They are very fast and agile under water and water clarity is not really going to be much of a factor deterrent. If they get in your pond ...they will find a way to get your fish!!! And...IF ONE finds your pond they could bring in dozens more!! They could wipe it out in no time!!
