Hello. I put Aselles (Asellus aquaticus) in a pot outside to see if they will accumulate enough Glycerol and sugar for complete freezing and survive. A+

Why freeze? They don't freeze in pond. No expert here but I would thing they would go to bottom of pond were it stays above freezing, may even dig into the mud.

I agree with nehunter that it is extremely rare that aquatic sowbugs in and among bottom materials would ever freeze in a normal depth pond with 4 to 8+ft of water. It does not happen due to the physical nature of water in ponds.

Even in a creek without a lot of water in it, if the water freezes and leaves a slight air space under it the ground will seldom freeze.
All the really good ideas I've ever had came to me while I was milking a cow.

Hello. I put all Asellus aquaticus in a tank for the winter. These Asellus come from a small swamp that is dry now. Without snow at minus 25-30c the ground can freeze up to 4 feet. A+

Hello.
So even the fish to protect themselves from the cold produce Glycerol.
A sugar alcohol that make the flesh of yellow-perch more delicate and tasty.
I like ice fishing. A+
