There's a couple quotes from Mark Twain that I would reference here, but I won't.

On with the regular programming.

We went quite a while with very little snow. Then a LOT of snow came in pretty short order. The power to the pumps cut off three times due to snow on panels and the low voltage disconnect. One stretch the power was cut off for three days. Based on past results, that is a HUGE test and the setup passed with flying colors. No domes formed and holes opened back up immediately. The holes also continued to grow each day until power cut off again. We will see what happens if I get a 3'-4' dump of snow at one time, but so far I am extremely happy!

The results continue to prove out. MNFish was exactly right. Suspended the diffusers over deep water is the answer. We initially went 4' deep. Next year I think I will move the diffusers to 3' deep. The quad results are very interesting to me. It is suspended 10' deep over 21'-22' of water. I always expect the quad to make the biggest hole and it always disappoints. I am assuming there are some reasons for that. Obviously deeper is not better when trying to de ice. This year also has some unique variables that do not make it apples to apples. One, because the quad is suspended so far off the bottom that makes a huge P-trap in the line that fills with condensation. It takes a good amount of run time before the PSI guage levels off to it's steady state pressure. It always starts off about 2 psi higher while that condensation is being blown out. Not sure of a way to solve that issue when working in 20'+ water. Two, I am only running the 1HP pump for 5 hours per day. The only time the quad diffuser pumps air is when the big pump is running. I am running the 1/2 HP pump 13 hours per day. Only the two duals pump air when the 1/2 HP pump is running. This definitely gives some credit to the "less horsepower, increased duration" train of thought. Of course duration is not an issue with 120V power. You guys have it easy. 120V aeration compared to intermittent solar aeration is like long range hunting with a high powered rife compared to traditional archery hunting with stone points. Then throw in 4'-5' of snow and 3' of ice. With all this in mind, the next round of upgrades to the solar system will include a solution for me to be able to run at least a 1/2HP pump 24/7 through the winter.

The pipes are a home run. Actually a grand slam and the windmill is proof of that. In the past the windmill has almost always been the first hole to disappear - even though it was close to shore in 5' of water. Why is that? Doming!! This year the windmill hole hasn't disappeared once!! Those results are in spite of the fact that this year has been a terrible year for wind up there. The wind data is no where even close to the last three years. I plan on upgrading the windmill compressor to the new OWS windmill compressor than can produce 4.5 CFM. That combined with the existing pipe and I expect the windmill to significantly contribute next winter.

On to pics for comparison.....

Yesterdays pic 12.17.2021. Holes look great. Windmill is small, but it is surviving! That is a huge improvement. The quad is battling back from being frozen over. Life is easy for the two duals. Holes aren't huge, but they will continue to grow until the next storm. The holes are also bigger than they appear in the pic because they are far from the camera. The far dual hole is ~300 yards away from the camera.

Last year 12.16.2020. Quad was struggling - struggling much worse than it is this year though. Close dual was domed over (donut pattern) already and not the first time it had done that. Small single hole was open but tiny. Windmill non existent. 2021 kills 2020.
[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

Two years ago. 12.17.2019. Not sure much needs to be said. No holes anywhere. Windmill non existent. 2021 absolutely destroys 2019.
[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

Three years ago. 12.18.2018. two diffusers running in the deep water. they are fighting to keep holes open. We were running the small pump 12-14 hours per day IIRC. Back when we were thinking duration. When we get further into the year you will see these eventually domed over with the infamous donut as proof.

I frickin' love this thread!! I hope you are proud of what you have accomplished! It's very inspiring to us schmoes down in the flat land. I had a winter kill last year simply because I'm an idiot.
On a tangentially related note, I read that lithium-metal-hydride batteries are almost ready for prime time. When they are, the ability to charge and store power from wind and solar is going to make a huge leap forward.

Merry Christmas!

Thanks Dr Luke! It's funny how these ponds seem to make almost everyone look like an idiot at times. What caused your winterkill?

I am not familiar with every single new battery chemistry out there. I know Brian is pretty excited about the Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries. I have to say this is going into my 5th winter with my cheap Flooded Lead Acid golf cart batteries. They have done amazingly well! It sucks when it's time to water all 24 batteries though! I am strongly considering just upgrading to a bigger set of true solar batteries in Flooded Lead Acid. If I could get another decade plus out of my 2nd set then the best chemistry for my 3rd set of batteries should be well developed and available if I had to guess.

Cool pic that came in earlier this month. The lack of snow then was scary. Now after about one week of snow we are at ~89% of normal LOL.

Here is the winter kill thread. I did have more fish survive than I originally thought, so that has been nice.

I think Brian and I are talking about the same new batteries maybe.

Unfortunately having some technical difficulties up there. The batteries died in the Reconyx camera that has the best point of view so haven't gotten any pics from it in a few weeks. It also takes one status pic a day even with no motion. Those are the pics I always use to compare. I do have a second camera that triggers off the windmill motion but it only captures approx half the lake.

Still have HUGE news! Never kept holes open this long!! EVER, and this ain't no easy year!! We have had a hell of a year for snow so far. I think we are sitting at ~140% of normal. We had a storm come in one week that shut the power down almost completely for a week! Then another storm after that. In the past this would have been the exact thing that would have created doming and the holes in the ice would have been gone for the rest of the winter. Instead, this year as soon as the power came back on, the holes around the pipes opened right back up immediately. Not only did the holes reopen but they continued to grow larger for weeks afterwards. The only diffuser that does not have a pipe is the quad. The only diffuser that does not have a hole open in the ice is the quad! The quad is suspended by a large buoy. This was done for two reason. One, it is suspended over very deep water and a pipe would have been difficult. Two, I wanted to see if a buoy was capable of disrupting the ice dome formation. Then I would not need pipes sticking out of the water. Well the buoy has failed and the pipes have been a huge success.

Another huge proof of the pipe concept is the windmill hole. That windmill is 7 years old now. It needs a new diaphram. It does not put out as much air as when it was new. The difference in the plume from new to now is substantial. Yet this is the first year EVER the windmill has kept a hole open ALL winter so far and it is doing it in a year with ~140%ish of normal snowfall. For the record, in the past the windmill diffuser was sitting at 5' deep with no pipe. This year the windmill diffuser is suspended from a pipe 12" below the water surface. I wasn't sure how 12" would do up there. I mean last year we measured the ice at three feet thick. I had no idea what would happen to a diffuser at 12" deep. However, this is all one big experiment so I figured what the hell, let's see. So far it is a huge success!!! Yes, it's a small hole, but the important part to me is the concept works with a broke down mill. OWS has a replacement compressor head for the windmill that supposedly cranks out 4.5CFM. After these results I NOW feel confident that would not be wasted money. Slap that sucker on my tower next year and boom, much bigger hole. Maybe they need an extreme conditions Beta tester!! My neighbors weather station recorded 87mph winds. Mine recorded 45mph winds. laugh

Next steps are figuring out 24/7 winter run time. That would mean more panels, bigger batteries and maybe a compressor change for winter. I also want more CFM in summer. Thinking maybe a second solar rig. Maybe direct drive or maybe battery back up.

Buffet,

Why do you want more CFM in summer? If you are just trying to increase the DO, wont the fish die in winter when the DO of summer can't keep up? If you want more turnover you could set up the rig like HighFlyer and George did with the Kasco 12v surface aerator with a solar panel and a battery.

Second, how much CFM do you run through the quad diffuser? I don't know what is better, more CFM through one vertex head, or a lesser amount through many heads.

Third, what type of buoy is holding the quad in the water table? What if you had a black buoy holding up a black piece of pipe or square tubing? I was thinking it would work like the big boulders that are surrounded by snow year round. The sun heats up the boulders and the snow closest to the boulders melt. This would mean it helps get a hole in the ice for you.

Fourth, with your electric production, wouldn't switching to Lithium help out in that regard? Or do your temps get too cold for lithium?

TT,

This isn't necessarily data, just observation. For a while I was running a 1HP pump to power my aeration. My DO never got as high as I would like even though water seemed fully mixed due to constant temp top to bottom. I then added a 1/2HP pump to my system running simultaneously with my 1HP pump. Water quality seemed to improve and my DO went up to a more desirable level, but not quite where I wanted it still. I THINK if I could replace my 1/2HP pump with another 1HP pump I would be sitting pretty. Problem is my inverter, battery bank, etc isn't quite big enough for that.

I do not know exactly how much CFM is running through the quad. I am running four diffuser stations off of a valve box. I just adjust the valves to make the plumes look appropriate. I am running somewhere around `11 CFM through basically 8 discs.

Mine is a marine buoy that will support 60lbs. It is rather big. Two negatives. One it sits in a part of the lake that gets a lot of shade compared to the other diffuser sites. Two, the buoy is white. I should have painted it, but I really don't know that would've helped. I THINK ice may have gotten underneath the buoy when power was down for a week. If that happens a dome is sure to form.

I am not real sure about the litihium thing. The definitely have more useable power, BUT you pay for that in a big way $$. AFAIK, they also require battery management systems. In a super remote setting like mine complexity kills and my system already has a lot of moving parts. I need simple and reliable. To me, it's hard to beat the reliability of flooded lead acid batteries. It just means I might have to buy a bigger battery bank than I need.

You mention 87 mph wind gusts. I was curious, what can your windmill handle? In high winds does the CFM keep going proportionately faster or is there some limit switch on the speed of the vanes up top, or maybe limit on the movement of the diaphragm producing the air down below? Come to think of it I have never seen what type of mechanical switches actually product the air on a windmill. Is it some right angle gears and some type of system that turns a rotating shaft into a circular up and down diaphragm action? There must be some limit to how fast the diaphragm cycles where you lose efficiency or output? If the windmill shaft instead ran a propeller (or impeller) underwater to produce air that would be cool!

You also had this theory about WHY the pipes work. My f/up question is do you think this same theory of ice not being able to grip the pipe would apply to a PVC pipe (which also doesn't conduct or attract as much heat or sunlight) or does it have to be a metal pipe? It sounds like you won't have to add any paint either, working pretty well.

"Pipe/Buoy color: I do not think the pipe or buoy heating up is what is helping break the dome. I am pretty sure it is a mechanical advantage of sorts. I think the ice begins to lift from the aeration and it slides up the pipe. I think this movement up the pipe creates a fracture OR the ice moves enough to create a gap that allows the air to vent and that keeps the ice from lifting off the water. Since the aeration keeps the ice thin around the pipe the ice can't get a good "hold" on the pipe so it seems no risk of the ice lifting the pipes up. I can always go back and paint black if need be next year."

If one wants dark plastic pipe you could use schedule 80 plastic which is dark gray.

Canyon - I now believe that theory was correct. The new pipes I put in place are unpainted galvanized with no holes drilled in them and they are working perfectly with no paint so I will just leave them. I would imagine PVC would work fine as well if you could hammer it deep enough into the pond bottom. The schedule 80 Bill mentioned above should handle some hammering.

As far as the windmills go, every windmill I have seen has some sort of furling mechanism for high winds. The koenders starts to automatically turn itself out of the wind around 30 mph or so. This protects it from over speeding. The turbine I have furls as well just in a different way. It actually tips backwards out of the wind around 30mph or so. The Koenders has a fairly simple camshaft that just pumps a rubber flap up and down to produce the air. We get some pretty ferocious winds up there. Worst one ever blew down thousands of trees starting just a couple hundreds yeards from the cabin. The aerial photo looks like an avalanche happened. It also lifted the american eagle windmill about 6" off of the 1" rebar spikes it is clamped to. A few more inches up the rebar and the windmill would have been blown over. Pretty crazy.

Got a data report and pics from the cabin. Piped diffusers still have open holes. Estimated size of the holes is 20' to 30' in diameter. The quad diffuser with the buoy is closed and has been for some time. I think the buoy is officially a fail for ice dome disruption. The quad diffuser receives more air than the other two diffuser stations yet the other two stations have kept holes open and quad has been closed for months. DO came in at 1.12ppm at 1 foot deep and .80ppm at 6 foot deep which was the bottom. At first I was disappointed with this but then after discussing I realized the DO readings were taken approx 200' away from any open holes. I THINK if I have 1.12ppm of DO 200 feet away from any open aeration hole I might be doing pretty good much closer to the holes. Plus, this is MUCH better readings than we have had in past winters. If the quad had been able to keep a hole open this reading would have likely been even better so there is still much room for improvement. Water temp was still surprisingly cold at 33.2F. I was expecting a little warmer.

DO was measured basically in the middle of the two holes.

"Hey, It's basically summer."
Now THAT is funny!

Even our wildland ponds around here at 8000' are getting ice along the edges each morning. I can only imagine how cold it is up at 10K'. Our rivers are just now starting to show color as the high elevation snow starts to melt. I'm bundling up with long johns, multiple layers of fleece, FITS socks, gloves too thick to fit into the trigger guard of my shotgun as I head out for another morning of hoping the gobblers will thaw out. BRRRR!

Most of our Forest Service roads are still gated, as the snow and mud is deep enough to mire any 4 wheel drive rig that attempts to pass. In fact, some ignorant greenhorns drove around the barriers on a gated major road recently in their newly acquired 4 Runner, ground their way into trouble for themselves, and had to be rescued. Hopefully their fines are used to help pay for the damage they've caused.

DUH

Please a summer time update? pictures of the trout? scuds? any crayfish?

I'm curious if your wooden trout spawning structures were successful?

What is your O2 and other water quality parameters looking like going into winter?

Did you say you updated your solar setup this summer?

You probably will see hard water in a week or two already?

Hey Canyon.

Good news and bad news.

Bad news is I went through an extremely contentious divorce and the ex got the cabin. The divorce lasted 18 months and right up until the end, Feb 2022, I thought I was getting the cabin. It More bad news is that the lake project is certainly dead. Obviously no one cared about it like I did, but on top of that no one else understands the system in any way. That part sucks. It was my favorite place on Earth. So I guess this is officially the end of this thread. Sorry y'all!

Good news is my life and my kids lives have never been better - so, please, no apologies!! Should be congratulations only. Got full custody of both my kids and we WILL find another cabin with a lake!! This time there won't be so much trial and error. I will know exactly what needs to be done!

Both sorry and happy for you, you put a boatload of sweat equity and money into that place I'm sure, it was absolutely incredibly beautiful, post card beautiful! I hope you find another place to your liking that makes you happy, I was able to find a farm just 25 minutes up the road, put a 15 acre lake on it and it is my happy place, don't want to leave, hopefully you can find one that is more enjoyable all year around!
Good luck to you and your young ones!!

Yes, congrats. The best to you in your search for another happy place, somewhere you can put down roots.
Maybe you'll find it at a moderate elevation this time, a place you can enjoy year 'round.
In Colorado the elevation band between say, 5500' and 7500' above sea level lets us have a "cool water" pond where both cold water trout and warm water sunfish and bass can live.
We'll be watching for your next thread. Thanks for all your post in this thread; your experiments, reasoning, discussions with all of us have been valued and enjoyed.

Thanks fellas! It has definitely been a fun process. I have appreciated all of y'alls input and interest. I'm not sure where I will wind up next, BUT I have picked up a Snocat and I do have considerable winter aeration experience under my belt now so a BIG part of me is hoping for another place in the mountains with some extreme conditions!! I don't want all my education to go to waste! Lol

Thanks for taking the time to update us! I apologize for having to be the one to push you to update us but I really have enjoyed and was many time inspired by your posts. So many beautiful pictures and so much experience is captured in your posts. I believe you will take this knowledge and rebuild and propel the technology.

I remember once how it struck me that with your efforts a new ecosystem was formed in a high altitude lake which never existed before. Few have been part of shaping the cycle of nature in a positive way.
