GSH don't usually school in large numbers like shad. They will often be in groups of smaller #s but don't feed like shad (large schools early morning and late afternoon on the surface).
Thanks Ewest Didn’t think shiners did that , so I’m not sure what they are….. had shad until it got down to -1….. maybe a few survivors made it
About to gear up and extend the 3" inlet pipe that fills my hatchery pond from the big pond. Water level's dropping like a rock, and there's no end in sight. I'm now able to walk out and reload brush piles in my Mucks, and not get wet. This isn't the lowest the big pond's been, but it's getting close.

Good job. If all you have is lemons, you might as well pull on your Mucks and make some lemonade!
I pride myself in respecting the science of meteorology, and the up and downs that may occur. I got the pump running as the sky turned black. I raced back to the house, opened all the shop and garage doors, and bent a wiper, rear window, on my wife's suv. 1.6" deluge in 20 minutes. I'll roll down one of her windows when she gets back.
EDIT: We're at 2.25", and water's running out of the hatchery pond overflow pipe. 8-10" rise, and the pump's now off.

Me too Pat. My spring fed creek has dried up. My small water holes are bare. My 1/4 acre GSF pond has just about had it. My 2 to 3 acre pond is down about 3 to 4 ft.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Boy, if I say "sic em", you'd better look for something to bite. Sam Shelley Rancher and Farmer Muleshoe Texas 1892-1985 RIP
I'm down about 1 foot. We havnt had a good down pour in a while. Keep getting storms around us but not pond fillers. Iv got cracks in the ground that makes ya want to step over them.
Here in central MO we were on the verge of getting really dry, yards starting to burn up, not near like I seen them in S Mo a couple weeks ago tho, but wound up getting a few hit and miss showers and seemed to sorta green things up pretty nice again, the crops look like that went a long ways to making them, but I did hook up to the plow yest to turn some ground for a fall deer plot and man is that dirt hard! and its a nice sandy topsoil bottom ground field. I bet some of these pastures have to be getting pretty hard. that old plow did some grunting to get it to go in the ground. Had my nephew in from Arizona for a week with his gf and we went out and caught some BG, bass and CC, didnt have any luck on WE, they may be down pretty deep this time of yr. they did get some good looks at the resident baldy that hangs around the pond, a lot of times there are two of them.

I don't see any opposable thumbs, how will he hold a rifle?
He does look like a beaut! Have you been feeding through the summer?
During the hot/dry spell, I have only seen fawns at my farm. I have almost stepped on them down in the grass. I have no idea where their momma's are. There are lots of deer tracks on the sandbars in the creek, but that is also some of our best deep shade.
I think that he shoots those tines like a porcupine (no thumbs needed)... I don't need to feed these guys; we have built prime habitat over the last 30+ years. Had 8+ different bucks on the cam over the last 5 days. We were dry but got good rain lately, but we have no shortage of watering sites. We built 4 ponds and over a half dozen wetlands, several of which have never gone dry. We hold deer pretty good, but they may show up anywhere which keeps things interesting. Also saw 3 big turkeys when I went out to change the card in my trail cam today. Took an old deer last year and let 2 higher scoring young ones walk. Cannot tell how old this guy is from the pics. He kinda looks young since his belly appears tight, so I may need to let him walk too. I would be shot on site!
I agree that he looks young and that is why I have elected to take older deer and let younger deer with higher scoring antlers walk in recent years. I am aiming for a 170+ trophy hopefully in my future. Still fill the freezer with does though. If all goes well, I'll be hunting this Fall without glasses for the first time ever. Had cataract surgery on my left eye last week and ended up with 20/15 in that eye. Next week I'll have the right eye done. A bit stressful, but it is great to have modern medicine. It's like seeing the world in hi-def for the first time!

Wow.
That may be one of the best "What did you do at your pond today" responses I have seen in a while!
These guys showed up at the mineral lick the other day, was getting sorta antsy as hadnt been seeing the number of bucks this summer as I have in the past.

Will the biggest bucks still hang out as "buddies" until they become rivals at some point before the rut? Or is there an alpha buck in the area, and he does not suffer the company of lesser bucks at any time of the year?
(I am trying to compare the sample of what I actually observe, compared to our true population.)

That's encouraging, I'm gonna have that done as well. Didn't even realize I had cataracts until visit with ophthalmologist last week. I see okay, but your hi-def comment got my attention.
My cataracts caused so much glare at night that I could not drive safely anymore. My cataracts were on the back of my lenses which apparently grow faster than other kinds. When they shined lights in my eyes and asked me to read the smallest line of letters, I could not even tell there were any letters there... Driving with one eye at night (until I get my second eye done) requires me to close the non-fixed eye so that the starbursts of light don't overpower the fixed eye. I just did not realize how bad things had gotten. When it comes to surgeries, I tend to push things out as far as possible, but I don't recommend this approach to others...

For the most part they all hang out as a group thru the summer months for whatever reason it seems like. Thats awesome RAH, I had very good vision for most of my life till in the last ten yrs it has went down hill quite a bit, from having to hold a newspaper at arms length in order to read it to my arms not being long enough, break out the readers. my distant vision still seems to be decent.
