Taurine is a critical protein in fish food, as our finny friends depend on it. What's interesting is that recent studies seem to show that taurine has profound positive effects on us, too.

In particular, it dials up insulin sensitivity, a big deal to Type 2 diabetics like myself. Some research indicates it also improves athletic performance by increasing the efficiency of muscle cells.

Best sources of taurine: Shellfish, mussels, scallops, tuna (especially the darker meat), and to a lesser extent fish in general. Tilapia & Salmon are good sources, and I suspect LMB and BG are as well. Feed 'em, then eat 'em! grin

The thing that completely changed my diabetic life was getting rid of nearly all carbohydrates and vegetable oils.

Three years ago I had been type II diabetic for probably at least 30 years. I had graduated up over those many years to taking a couple of diabetic medicines plus four shots of insulin a day totaling 100 units. Plus a smattering of another half dozen prescription drugs to control my blood pressure and the other "normal" old age stuff.

Cut the carbohydrates nearly out (under 20 total grams a day) and within a week had to cut my insulin in half. In two weeks was completely off insulin injections and have not had a shot of it since. Within a few months off all my other prescription medicines because I no longer needed them. Got off pain medications for my back and knees. Basically turned my life completely around. Oh, and lost 100 pounds, from 270 to 170.

Be three years come next march and changing what I eat (mostly what I no longer eat) has been the best thing I have done for my health that I can think of. I eat lots. Never go hungry or starve myself. I just don't eat sugar or starchy things that turn into sugar. If it doesn't go into the mouth, it can't show up in the bloodstream. I eat mostly meat and eggs, with only a few green low carb vegetables. And fish.

Others results may vary, but my blood sugar now with no medication is much better than it every was with gobs of medication and eating foods that raised my blood sugar. See Dr Ken Berry on Youtube. He is one of about a dozen on line doctors that have completely changed the way my wife and I look at health in general and type II diabetes specifically. Dr Eric Westman is another good Youtube source.

Great to hear of your success, John! I've cut back on sugar & carbs, but probably not as much as you.

Do you exercise as well?

Funny you should mention that. A good friend sent me a few of his you tube videos this morning and he's also experienced what you have seen. He's cutting back on his meds and is feeling much better.

You ARE what you eat and it's amazing how your diet affects how you feel.
