Hello.

The beginning of my tests.

It's not the small house flies that go in the bucket but the big green flies, the larvae will come out from the bottom.

I take the rest of the Perch.

Hello.

Yes, I will also try the dog food.

They say it works just as well, minus the scent.

Hello.

There are already plenty of eggs on the rest of the Yellow-perch, eggs hatch in one day.

The fry will feast.

But before the fry are big enough to eat them I'm going to put the bucket on the raft for the big Perch in the pond.

cover straw on a couple inches on bottom and cover the dead stuff with a couple inches or so of straw as well. Flies with find their way to the fly buffet and stink will be less. I have advocated this for sometime to our fishing club and the response was if you feed the fish this way or with commercial food it would train them not to bite. The people in charge of this club are bat crap crazy. I am glad you are using a inexpensive way to feed fish naturally.

Hello.

At $65.00 for 20 kg it no longer makes sense.

It is high time to find alternatives.

These larvae are going to be surplus, after the minnows and crayfish that I give them.

If it works I will make 3 rafts and buckets which will be black so they are less visible, also place in less visible places on the pond.

Hello.

The Yellow-perch fry are about 1 inch, so I installed the bucket.

They never heard of grub imitators or Stubby Steve, I guess. My experience with feeding is that it tends to concentrate & stimulate the fish, as well as improve growth rates & spawning. All in all, a big plus for fishing!

Hello.

Thousands of larvae fall into the water continuously, they float, the fry will have to come and get them on the surface.

With hay at the bottom and on top it smells less than when there is a dead fish on the pond.

I'm going to make my raft for the pond for the big Perch.

Black soldier flies are also an option, less stink and great protein.

Does any nasty stuff drip into the water? I'm a little concerned that doing this in a pond that gets swam in might end up with some weird flesh eating bacteria or something growing in it. Has this been a concern or problem for anyone? I know water gets dead things in it all the time but that might not be like a bucket of continuously cultured rotting flesh oozing out of it. Just wondering...

A+, pretty neat ideas.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Hello.

To date it does not work.

If on the internet we can see video where the fish eat the fly larvae, the Yellow-perch refuses them completely and will even spit them out.

I will have to change my approach.

Hello.

I put the fly larvae in a bucket with wet oatmeal for a day, then I collect the larvae and put them in a dispenser under the light.

Last night I saw Yellow-perch fry eat larvae without spitting them out.

Even yellow perch know that oatmeal is good for you!

Another source of “natural” fish food. Shoot a possum, coon, etc. Hang it from a branch over the pond. Flies will be drawn to it, deposit eggs that become maggots, etc. A certain number of the maggots will fall into the water. Free fish food.

Oh yeah, pay attention to the prevailing wind so the odor will blow away from your fishing spot.

Hello.

My hopes have faded.

I quickly returned to my feeder with fish food, before the fry died of hunger.

Despite the fly larvae spent 1 to 2 days in the Oatmeal the Yellow-perch continue to refuse them.

I have given Grindalls worms before 2 years ago to the fry, and they ate them easily.

Would Yellow-perch have thin beaks, would other fish have accepted the larvae.

Making fly larvae is very easy, I made them in a bucket then I separated them in another bucket, I had a large quantity with only 3 buckets in rotation.

I find it disappointing, I don't know for other fish but for Yellow-perch it doesn't work.

I have switched to pizza for food for my feeders. I have a pizza place that throws out pizzas at the end of the night I go by and get it get it a little wet put it somewhere with a good fly population let them lay eggs then place it in my floating feeder. It's covered with a plastic tote the eggs hatch and the larva feed then drop into the water. No smell at all but lots of larva

Hello.

I just read that Yellow-perch have kind of taste buds on their lips, allowing them to choose their food.

Yellow-perch can taste food and refuse it if it does not like it.

I guess all fish should be the same.

I tried again but they still refuse fly larvae made with leftover fish.

I understand it a little, it must not taste very good.

So I made 3 buckets with different recipes.
1 Chicken manure.
2 Oatmeal with milk.
3 Oatmeal apple juice and apple rings.
