Good morning. I could use your help confirming if the plant in the attachments is southern naiad. If it is I'd love to know your thoughts on the best way to help keep it under control. The pond is approximately 60 acres with around 25 acres ranging from 1-6 feet deep. I've noticed what appears to be naiad getting more and more prevalent over the last 2 or 3 years. My assumption is grass carp would be the easiest option but please let me know your thoughts. Thanks.
I have naiad, pbd. Seems to be spreading & flourishing around the country lately. Your pics look like it, but hard to be sure.
My BOW is much smaller than yours, so a couple of years ago I had the water treated with a herbicide that killed most of the southern naiad. It came back the following spring, but was much more manageable. I need some plant cover, so long as it doesn't get out of hand.
For a 60 acre lake, 25 acres being vulnerable, grass carp probably makes the most sense. Be absolutely certain to identify the pond weed, preferably by a professional, before taking any measures. Grass carp don't eat all weeds, and once you put them in, it's hard to get them out!
Thanks for the info. One of my concerns with grass carp is that they'll be snacks for the LMB in the pond. I guess I could stock more than is recommended but I worry that they'll end up taking out too much of the grass in the pond. Does anyone have suggestions on who to contact in the Georgia/South Carolina region to do an assessment?
