Hello everyone.

I have a pond a little under a quarter acre with a working dam and a working stand pipe that drains to a good level. However, the previous owner, nervous about clogging the stand pipe, put a grate over top that has proven to be pretty high maintenence with constant need for clearing off so that it doesn't clog upon entry.

I would love any suggestions on how to handle this. I'm not sure I need a cover like this, and would prefer something else. I've seen a few options but would love any strategic input.

Thanks so much.

Thanks for the quick reply, RAH. So you're suggesting something that protrudes up from the waterline at all times? Seem practical, if not aesthetically pleasing.

They still require periodic cleaning, but much less than what you posted in your pic.

RAH is correct, anything flat on the surface, especially that fine of a screen, will get covered with debris extremely quickly, something that projects upward out of the water will be a lot less, if any, maintenance. as the water level rises it will have a new area to exit the pond from, whereas the flat surface one, once it covers over with debri, rising water won't do anything but seal it off tighter.
The bar guards could be painted a more subtle cover if you dont like the color, I think they are painted a bright color so as to be seen easier by farmers when they are tilling the fields that have drain tiles in place.

@gehajake and @RAH

Thank you both for the insight and input. That makes a lot of sense and looks lot more palatable in black smile

Take a look at what I posted in the following link. Simple and extremely effective as long as your stand pipe isn't too big.

I would paint it whichever color is most terrifying to cormorants! grin
