I was planning on ordering 4 pounds of shiners for my pond but got to thinking it might be smart to wait till late spring when my trout will die. Since the trout are so active in the winter time, I didn't know if I would just be throwing a snack in there and the trout would wipe them out. I do have plenty of other predators in the pond, but the trout just seem so voracious this time of year compared to the LMB, YP, BG. Any thoughts?

What's the cost for 4 lbs. of Golden Shiners?

I think Anderson is charging $120 shipped. Wish I could find somewhere local buy more.

For $120.00, I would say it depends on your skills at self-rationalization.

I recently stocked GSH thinking they'll survive the winter, but this is like a third marriage, a triumph of hope over experience. Stocking when they are spawning in spring probably a better bet, trout or no.

My bet is that the shiners will do fine cept for the ones that get eaten

I think it's a question of if spending $120.00 hurts your pocket book or not.

If not, I'd do it.

But, if baby needed a new pair of shoes......

This is where I would place my bet if I was trying to establish or trying to produce forage from reproduction.

Thanks for the replies. The $120 was never really the issue, just didn't want to waste the time and money putting them in there in the winter if it was going to be a waste.

If you can afford $120 each time I would do both fall and spring pre-spawn. Do you have adequate spawning structure and good habitat for hatchling shiners to survive? If you put shiners in this fall let us know how well they survive until May. Monitor their density by trapping or use a beach seine.
