Jeff:

Objective is to get a good representative idea of the fish in the pond. It doesn't matter if they will bite a hook or not, they will be stunned and depending on the water visibility they can be scooped up with a net and placed in a live well on the boat. You turn the juice on and motor around the perimeter of the pond. Depending on the conductivity of the water and how the unit is adjusted, it affects a swath that is 6'-8' wider than the boat and goes down 4+ feet. We did a 4 acre pond and a 1/2 acre pond in 4 hours start to finish, including talking for a while with the pond owner. Some fish were netted and removed, some fish were left in but noted, some fish were netted, weighed, measured and released back into the pond. It doesn't matter if the fish are 1/2" long or 30+" long, they will be stunned and can be netted.

Cost all depends on travel time and miles.

For instance, we removed all crappie and catfish we stunned. There was a huge class of 4"-6" LMB, we removed about 50% of what we observed.

In the 1/2 acre pond, which was supposed to be a forage grow out pond for the larger one, we observed a big swirl when we pulled up. So, we plopped the boat in and pulled out a ton of 1 1/2" Bluegills saw 2 GSH, and pulled out a few 10"-12" LMB. Told the owner that he should pull the plug on the forage pond, letting everything flush into the bigger pond, then let the forage pond fill up to cover any depressions, then Rotenone it and start over. They had a 7" rain in less than 24 hours and the forage pond (which is actually a silt trap pond) overflowed the berm into the big pond. We can only assume a few LMB and at least a pair of BG swam upstream into the silt pond.

Thanks Scott. This might be something I’m interested in doing. I think I’m a little too far from you though. Also, I assume fish are not hurt in the process?
Thanks again

No, fish are not hurt. (well maybe, if their brains worked like ours) "Honey, you would never guessed what happened today, I was abducted by aliens!"

I worked up the gumption yesterday to put a couple cubic yards of cobble down along the pond bank.
This is the main gulley wash water collector spot, and was experiencing some noticeable erosion from the rainfall runoff.
I heaped it up a foot or so from grade, and will come behind it with some smaller material to fill the gaps a bit.
Hopefully it will stop the bank from cutting further, and collect some sediment that comes with a toad strangler.

I did that last year before a toad strangler hit, I had fixed the ruts, and installed these rocks, it really helped.

I had a neighbor with a little yappy dog which never shut up (the dog, not the neighbor). Thought about throwing dog treats into the pond & teaching the dog to fetch. Feed my largest LMB, and restore domestic tranquility at the same time!

Had a friends boy fish the pond today to remove some biomass, picture is in the show off your catch category.

Pond is dropping again due to no rain, I've lost everything I gained this year so it's back to being close to 6' below full pool, maybe more.

Actually from 10/10/21. I’m getting slower and slower as I get older. crazy

Broke our pond record 19.5” SMB. Son in law caught it, (but their youngest takes better pics, Ha!) Our pond is down about a foot. Was pretty dry through September. Getting some October rain, but nothing with runoff.

I'm removing some biomass from the pond before winter. Here's yesterdays take:
HSB
23.5" 5.95#
21.5" 5.7#
21.0" 3.98#

LMB
15" 1.98#
11.5" 0.79#

Goal is to remove 60# of biomass. RW's are low due to not feeding near as much this year as previous years and due to the low water level (between 5' low and 7' low all year) there was basically 0 spawning habitat for the fish so very little recruitment this year. If things don't change for next year I'm afraid I will have to poke a well in. Not looking forward to doing that cue to cost and then the monthly electrical cost, but if we don't get the moisture this winter/spring 2022, something has to change.

For reference, from Mr. Cody
Hybrid Striped Bass (HSB) Standard Weight
6" = 1.6oz
8" = 3.8oz,
10"= 7.8oz
11"= 10.56oz
12"= 13.9oz,
14"= 1 lb 6oz
15"= 1 lb 12oz
16"= 2 lb 4oz
17"= 2 lb 9.6oz
18"= 3 lb 1.7oz
19"= 3 lb 10.8oz
20"= 4 lb 5.1oz
21"= 5 lb 0.06oz
22"= 5 lb 13.3oz
23"= 6 lb 11.4oz
24"= 7 lb 10.6oz
25"= 8 lb 11.4oz
26"= 9 lb 13.6oz
27"= 11 lb 1.4oz
28"= 12 lb 6.8oz
29"= 13 lb 14oz
30"= 15 lb 7oz

esshup,

Sorry about your low moisture. Hopefully you get some favorable weather to avoid the expense of a well!

I believe I have seen (in my limited experience) bass RWs go UP when a pond initially drops a few feet below normal pool. I assume this is because the forage fish, crawdads, etc. lose their protective cover. Those ponds then seem to get WORSE from that point going forward - but that is usually correlated to a 1-2 year drought for the water level to stay low for an extended period.

Have you observed the initial UP and then the long term DOWN in relative weights in your experience? If so, any advice for fish management projects to be staged at that point? (Like your culling.)

P.S. Are you culling with hook and line? If so, are some of your hook-shy fish being caught more easily as they are starting to feel more hunger pangs?

My pond has been low since it was last at full pool in early June 2020. The rain faucet shut off and with the farmer running the center pivot the pond level had dropped to 7' below full pool by late October 2020. Rain/snow was sparse that winter and the pond only gained 2 feet of water by May. The fain faucet shut off again at the end of June and the 2 feet gained was lost. RW's were better last October than this October.

Angling to remove fish, both with lures and with Stubby Steves. Feeder is shut way down, set for 1 sec morning and evening, so even the pellet trained fish are hungry. Once the removal goal has been reached I will see if they still want food, but water temps should be in the high 40's by then. Water temp is now 54 and they are still feeding. HSB, YP for sure.

That is tough luck. I won't complain about our dry weather this past summer. Nothing like what you have going on. Wishing you some good rains!

Ran a shallow seine net Saturday afternoon, water temp in the low 50s. Got mostly shiners and yoy RES. The large shiner removal count is now at 364.

I made the mistake of accepting electrosurvey for 3 November, even though I wasn't happy about it being so late in the season. Now I see temps will be in the 40s that day, with rain.

In the future, if they want to schedule much past third week of October, I'll decline. Too much chance of cold weather driving fish deep, out of electro range. Bad for harvesting small LMB, bad for measuring what is going on with my fish. Disappointed they did this to a regular customer.

Thus ends my rant.

Stocked 10k GSH today. Loads of newly hatched CNBG in shallows. No sign of cormorants yet, but we did see a bald eagle.

Cold has driven large fish to deeper water. 5.3 lb LMB biggest shocked up. However we did catch LMB and HSB better than that with shad crankbait. One HSB just kept going, never even slowed despite firm drag. Harvested 64 small LMB.

Are they aware of this being a problem? I'm sure they are being their profession. Did they offer you a discounted rate or a redo at another time?

Price was higher, like all prices these days. They know I'm not happy at delay, though.

On a plus note, we saw an eight point buck trotting along the dam this morning.

I pulled the diffuser stand out of the deep water yesterday. Had a bit of trouble getting the cinder block base loose from the clay on the pond bottom.
I'm sure it was quite the sight... old fat man standing in pond hopper boat yanking on a slimy rope while spinning in circles and spouting every profanity
know to man. It finally popped loose and I was able to pull it up to the boat. I did do one thing right that made it easier to get the diffuser stand from
the deep water to the dock - I bent a piece of 3/8" rebar into sort of an S-hook and hung that in an oar lock and over the gunwale and hung the stand
from that rather than hauling the whole thing into the boat.

Once I recovered from that ordeal I took the other diffuser and suspended it like a chandelier from a line attached to the dock. The diffuser is ~18"
below the surface in 4 foot of water. Time will tell if it's in the right place. I'd like to think it's in a spot that will prevent the dock from being locked in ice,
but until we get ice, there's no way to be sure. It's easy enough to move it if need be.

Augie, how thick is your ice in a normal winter? We normally don't get any where I am, but last winter the Great Freeze changed that.
