All, I am looking for an inexpensive directional feeder to try on a small river to hold trout. I plan to stock this fall and I am trying to keep some fish in the area. It may be a waste of money but I wanted to try something. Any suggestion on a feeder?

Thanks!

I can't answer your feeder question, but there's a guy on Youtube I follow called The Wooded Beardsman and he made a maggot box and hung it over a deep hole in a small creek and it appeared to attract Brookies and a few Creek Chubs. He basically took some road kill and put it in a 5 gallon bucket with some holes in the bottom, and hung it over the water. Flies go in, lay their eggs, and maggots hatch, feed on the rotten meat, and eventually fall into the water. Pretty neat concept if your stomach can handle it.

Odds of someone stealing your directional feeder - high!

Odds of someone stealing your maggot box - nearly zero (at least for two-legged thieves)!

Thanks Steve but I don't think the wife would go for maggot box hanging in the backyard.

Moultrie makes a kit that you can attach to the bottom of a 5g bucket (or 55g barrel...)
I use it, and they are fine for the price. Lost one to a storm (slaps forehead).
Just make sure to drill a big hole

Im going to ask a lot of questions, but only because I'm clueless

What makes the directional part a must? Any way to hang a "deer/game" style feeder out over the water? They can be had for cheap and should prove your test one way or another.

You mean you didn't add a maggot box to your prenup?

....and the romance of several-day-old, rotting road kill when the wind blows just right??

I have the 15 gallon moultrie directional, it was about $100. Works fine but every decent rain the feed gets wet and clogs. For this reason i never put more than 5 gallons of feed in so when it clogs i can save the feed in a 5 gallon bucket. Takes 5 min to cleanout and put the feed back. I still use it but upgraded for new pond to 2 of the 175# Texas Hunter which are awesome.

Ahhh, ok, so the "'Til death do we part" thing is actually referencing the road kill. Got it.

Moneypit. I saw a nice not-so-fresh deer sleeping on the side of 422 on the way in today. I'll toss it in your truck.

They've gone to plaid.
