we are building a pond in northeast texas and will have the normal LB, BG baitfish catfish mix in it. We aren't at the property all the time so we need a pretty large feeder. If anyone has any suggestions on one and the size that would be great. Also how long will a full feeder last before we need to fill up?

Also Ive looked at just about every feed out there and cant seem t decide on which one is best. Ideally we need one feed for bluegill catfish and one for feed trained largmouth. What are your guys' go to feeds?

I use cargill 4512 and a Texas Hunter feeder for 7 years . As long as you use 40% or better protein you should be fine, lower protein is fine for catfish but not enough for good growth on BG
The feeder holds 70# feed and lasts about 3weeks

Texas Hunter also has a feeder that Lake Managers sell that holds 100# of feed (only sold thru their distributors), and one that holds 250# of feed.

They make directional feeder control units that you can hook up to most deer feeders. I just repurposed an old 300# deer feeder and put one of these on it. They had it in stock at my local feed store but I was able to find it online to show you what I'm talking about: https://westtexasfeedersupply.com/product/12-volt-directional-control-unit-wthe-timer/

this has a better picture of the top to show you how it works:
https://www.premierfeeders.com/west_texas_feeder_supply_directional_control_unit_58080_prd1.html

It throws pretty far, but you'd still need the feeder to be up on the edge of the water because some just drops straight down.

I didn't pay as much as that website is asking though, so you should check your local feed store see what they have or if they can get one. Might save you a bit.

Dilley, that's interesting. When you say "pretty far", how many feet would you say is "pretty far"?

Well, the furthest kernel probably throws 15-20' easily. It's just the bulk of it probably closer to 6ish feet and everything in between. I have mine on the edge of a floating dock and a small bit falls on the deck still the rest makes it to the water.

some of it will make it as far as the furthest left point of the picture. The bulk of it lands right in the middle between the left edge of the picture and the floating deck. This is an old crank up feeder I wasn't using anymore.

Pat, let me run to the pond, put mine in a test mode and I will measure the distance with my laser rangefinder then report back.

Back in a few.

O.K., I'm back.

Feeder is on a platform, facing east. It is a Texas Hunter Lake Manager 175. Platform is 5' above the water level in the pond now. The feeder faces East. Wind is coming from the ESE at 8 to 15 mph. I am feeding a 50/50 mix of Optimal Bluegill and Optimal Bass food. The furthest pellets were hitting the water at 66 feet from the feeder, a few hit 69 feet, with the majority of them landing between 30 and 55 feet from the feeder.

I figure I got more distance because of the height off of the water, but that was negated with the wind blowing against the feed that was being thrown from the feeder. It was all landing in an area that it typically lands in when the pond is at full pool with no wind.
