Pond Boss Forums GENERAL QUESTIONS Muddy water How to control sediment

So I drove around the pond on Friday. I am trying to think of ways to control the amount of sediment that goes into the pond and clouds it up. We have no riprap along the shoreline. North end of the pond is like only ankle deep is where I think most of the sediment comes from. North of that is a silt dam that my cousin put in a year ago to catch anything flowing into the pond. Is that like any type of grasses or plants I could plant in the very shallow north end of the pond where the silt dam drains into that would catch the sediment even more and hold it back some? I wish I could post pics by my iPhone takes to big of photos and I cant upload them. If I could it would help explained things better.

Couple of options:
1) Dig a silt/sediment trap pond. Faster flowing water enters the pond, the sediment drops out and cleaner water goes to the pond. Then you clean that pond out every few years. Without looking it up I don't know what dwell time you would be shooting for in that pond.
2) Put up a silt fence, but that all depends on how much water is flowing.
3) Planting a lot of rushes and sedges to slow down the speed of the water in that area, allowing the sediment to settle out. BUT if the ground is flat, shortly it will not be flat and the sediment laden water will start running around that area.

If you can maintain good, dense, fairly tall grass cover on the upstream side(s) of the pond, it will limit dirt washing into it.

I stop mowing the grass around my ponds early enough in the Fall to leave it 6"+ tall over the Winter.
