Ive been trying to manage my neighbors pond (along with mine) and the FA is out of control, i had it decent with Cutrine plus then added 40lbs of Tilapia (his pond is about 1 acre) when Tilapia was added there was some minor FA but I sprayed again and it was finally clear. 3 days later warm front came through and pond exploded, I only had about a quart of Cutrine left so I sprayed again but next day even worse. My question is am I not spraying enough? I ordered another Gallon plus dye, should I spray the whole gallon and then spray again if it comes back or is there anything else I can do?

I dont get it because my 3/4 acre pond just 100 yards away is perfectly clean, and his was good but then came back. We did have an unusual cold front prior to the warm up (nightime lows in the 40's) do tilapia not eat when its cold? will spraying twice and warm weather get the tilapia going?

Dave, I'm sure no expert but I have had tilapia stocked at my place for years. They are tropical fish and hate cold weather, usually dying when water temps drop below 52F.

Likely they were able to shelter in water warmer than that, so you still have them, but sudden cold turned them off. At least, that's my best guess.

Davecz, I had 5 Tilapia die on me that I had in the holding tanks. I put them in there to eat the FA that would grow. It got COLD since they were stocked and they shut down eating. I am circulating pond water through the holding tanks, but they aren't insulated. With the warmer weather they will start eating again.

You should see the Cutrine Plus and the dye Friday. grin

As for the Cutrine Plus liquid, you need 0.6 to 2.4 gallons per acre foot of water, depending on how much FA there is. For the smaller pond, I'd only use the Cutrine Plus liquid around the shoreline and treat the deeper water (greater than 24" in depth) with Cutrine Plus granules, at the rate of 60# per surface acre.

The smaller pond is roughly 7/8 acre, I mapped it for the fountain..........

Thanks esshup, I thought the cold weather might have slowed em down, I dont think any of them died but it got pretty cold for a few nights. The one pond is still algae free but this one is a lot clearer and shallower in the middle. New grass was planted along the south slope with starter fertilizer as well, its been watered daily and Im thinking they might have used too much fertilizer so that might be getting into the pond as well.

Ill spray, dye, and then granule in deeper water if still needed. Hopefully clear pond update soon to come.
