Spray day here. The water was getting sketchy again, so I treated coontail, bushy pond weed, and a rapidly growing ugly bloom. I treated 3 acres today, and will do another 3 acres after this treatment runs it's course. Probably a total of 4 treatments by the time I'm done.

Had a little bright spot after 3 years of failure attracting wood ducks to my duck huts. I had a male and 2 female ponds walking around on the grassy bank on the SW corner of the pond as I left for work this morning. The duck hut is on a PVC pole, mounted in the water about 20 feet away from where they were on shore. I thought what is the chance that one of those hens will go into that hut? Probably not much chance this late in the spring. But it still was great to see them. An hour later they were gone and never came back all day.

in the woods behind our house there are some natural swampy areas and another couple of shallow ponds (vernal pools maybe?) Neighbors see wood ducks on the ponds but they don't take to nest boxes there either. I think they have too many prime old trees with holes in them to pick from already.

Topwater opportunity? I've seen fish go nuts on ponds where mowing sent grasshoppers fleeing into the water.

Went fishing today, harvested about ten. Nothing huge, but fun. Saw one dirty nasty cormorant. For whatever reason, hummingbirds have stopped visiting our feeders, a real disappointment.

Water still tinged green, but not nearly enough despite 75 lb of fertilizer so far. Even saw a few RBT at the feeder, but LMB, CNBG, and HSB dominated. Extensive CNBG beds now clearly visible around the pond in the usual places.

Unusually murky after 9 inches of rain. Emergency spillway no longer running, but clearly it did during the storm. Trout seem energized by cool new water, I caught my 2021 personal best after a savage fight. My fishing buddy also caught about a 4 lb HSB and a 1 plus lb CNBG.

LMB were a little off, though we did catch a few. Water got in lower unit of one TH feeder, didn't short it out but no longer feeds pellets to fan. We'll see if that can be fixed.

Get all the food out and toss it. Clean the feeder well and put a fan on it to dry it. It should be fine. A friend had the largest size TH feeder at his pond, it was completely submerged. Got it out, washed all the feed out of it, put a box fan on it for 2 days, replaced the timer and battery and it is still working. That was a number of years ago.

anthropic, I would also unplug the 3 to 4 wiring connectors to make sure they dry out also.

Well, we pulled out the partially submerged TH feeder and got to work. Emptied feed, spun fan, but still wouldn't drop pellets Finally I hit it hard several times to try to knock loose any clumps in the bottom unit and lo & behold, IT WORKED!

Refilled, reset, and now it's doing just fine. Thanks to all for the helpful advice.

RBT still biting, I'm surprised to say. Guess it's been a cooler than average spring. HSB tearing them up, we've caught several in 5 to 7 lb range. CNBG doing well, too. LMB a little slow, but then we've taken out 125 the last two weeks so maybe that has something to do with it.

No cormorants. Nesting geese have left without goslings, maybe the raccoons got to the nest. Pond slowly returning to normal levels after big rain event, viz still murky but gradually beginning to clear.

Got lucky on the feeder Frank. I went fishing yesterday with a bunch of Boy Scouts that I volunteered my pond to for the day. Had a good LMB on that my neighbor guesstimated at 8# jumped close to where he was ..... she spit the hook...... quick release..... it was fun

Trap was set for a fish killer (otter) and trap caught a fawn killer (yote) instead.

Great!!! Take a hose and wash out all remnants of the wet pellets so they don't mold any fresh food you put in there. Take the clear plastic covers off and wash them out too.

It's been mostly raining here for a week. Too muddy to work on rip-rap. Been snipping sprouts and planting some ground
cover where the rip-rap is finished. Thinned some creeping phlox and some moneywort from one of Mrs. Augie's flower beds.
I'm not sure how it will do out there, but most of it looks good so far.

Last summer the muskrats wiped out all of my APW and arrowhead, but I noticed yesterday that both are starting to make a
comeback in a few places. Hopefully that will continue.

Augie,

Your Moneywort should love the edge of the water line. Mine will expand up the bank into the ever-choking grasses and sporadically get out into the water about a foot or so. 99% of the roots are not under the water, but right at the shore.

The last remaining APW from what you gave me is still hanging on in a hanging bucket. I wasn't sure it was still there, but it has emerged this spring sharing the bucket with some Water Primrose.

Neopond sent me some seeds from his Yellow Flag Iris' last fall (somewhere near a thousand). I have that started in a large germination tray and have begun transplanting that to the pond. If all goes will in a month or so...I may have extra sprouts to share.

The moneywort that you gave me is coming back strong everywhere that I planted it, in spite of now being covered by a foot of crushed limestone.
It's creeping out of the gaps between the rocks and starting to look happy again. The moneywort that I got from Mrs. Augie's flowerbed is the
yellow type, which should nicely complement your dark green variety.

Iris is on my list of plants to put out there. I have a ton of it here - yellow, purple, blue, miniature, and some multi-color hybrids. Most of them
came from my grandparents farmstead, others from Mom, and still others from the old abandoned farmstead across the road. They've all been
in the ground long enough that they could stand some thinning, so it's just a matter of waiting for them to finish their bloom stage, then transplant
some rhyzomes out on the pond dam.

I'm a bit worried about the pickeral weeds that I bought last summer. None of the three are showing any signs of life so far this spring. I caged
all of them when I set them out, which saved them from the muskrats, and they seemed to be doing well last summer. Maybe those are just
late to the party?

The cardinal flower, buttonbush, and marsh milkweed that we set out summer of '19 are well established and looking good. The mud plantain
that was so abundant in '19 hardly showed itself last summer, and the muskrats wiped out what little there was. I'd like to see it come back.

Pickerel weed at my pond had a 50% come-back the first winter (maybe less), but those survivors have been reoccurring the last two springs. I think the trick is to get them established rather deep. My pond seems to get 10-12" of ice most years and I bet the PW established roots need to be a bit deeper than the ice gets. This year, the PW has been slow to show up and got hit by a couple of frosts. It's trying, but rather small so far....Fingers crossed for yours. The Thalia Dealbata (water canna???) is doing real well, however.

I am curious how your "yard iris" do at the pond. It's my assumption that the blue and yellow flag iris' are more adapted to being right at the water, whereas the common yard iris' may not like saturated soil...IDK.

I may hit you up for some buttonbush seed this year. I love that stuff and have none on my property.

I followed the destructions given by the nursery when I planted the pickerel weed. My pond was tip-top full when I set them out.
By the end of last summer it was down a bit, and it stayed that way all winter. The pickeral weed was above the water line all
winter. I bet it froze out.

The water in my pond has been much more turbid than usual this spring. It was looking nice early, but shortly after I started the aerator it began to get ugly.

Then a few days ago, Lamont's dim bulb got a little brighter. "Where's the float that you tied to the diffuser stand?" It's under water. Derp...

The stand had tipped over so the diffuser was laying in the mud on the bottom of the pond. I pulled it up, replaced the diffuser ring, replaced the pool
noodle floats on top of the stand, and dropped it back in.

If the water doesn't start to clear up within a few days I'll shut the air pump down and give it some time to settle.

Surface temp is 72° F. The weather was hot and sunny for a change, so the wife and I took a swim after we finished our chores. We gave our Aussie pup her
first swimming lesson. She likes the water, so it shouldn't take much time for her to get the hang of it.
