I'd be worried that, even if they did, the eggs might not get enough oxygen circulation.

You know, Bluegill will spawn on pretty much anything. I had some acquaintances in college who shared that characteristic with Bluegill. I am pretty sure one story even involved astroturf! However, these same guys did not seem very capable of caring for their offspring, so I think the Bluegill were probably smarter.
