Looking for any expertise here. We just bought a place with a 1 acre pond with a little vegetation. Moss is a little heavy on one side but overall it is pretty clear. There seems to be a lot of BG ranging from fingerlings to larger BG. I do not see that there are many bass based on the BG population and the fact that we haven't caught any. My plan was to add some tilapia when it gets warm enough (I am in NTX) and also add in around 50 bass fingerlings. Any advice is appreciated.

Lots of bluegill MAY indicate the pond is lacking in a significant bass population.

However, you could have a number of larger bass in the pond. In that case, there is a chance your 50 bass fingerlings will just become an expensive snack for the larger bass.

If you can get a better sampling of the bass population, then some of the experts on Pond Boss can tell you the appropriate size of bass to stock to correctly supplement your existing LMB population.

Welcome to Pond Boss!

Good luck on your "new to you" pond.

Fish it, Fish it, Fish it. Do all that you can to determine what your pond has in it before adding too it. Since you have a lot of BG, try setting up a trot-line or jug lines using 2 to 3" BG as live bait. This should tell you if you have LMB (maybe even CC).

Fish on!,

^^^^This. My bass are almost impossible to catch on lures. I use BG for cut bait and live bait on Carolina rigs to catch them with any consistency.

Agree Dave. A 2 to 3 inch bluegill is hard to beat when bass fishing research.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
