Does anyone have suggestions about getting an old gate valve to seal that’s under water and ice. I have closed it as far as possible and it will not seal.

Have you tried opening it and letting some water flow then closing it? Some time something will get into the valve and keep it from closing all the way

CB100 that is a fact about gate valves. May have to cycle it open and closed a couple times to get the trash out.....worth a try

In doing my research for a gate valve I have seen where many people have problems with them leaking. So much so I have thought of building my own but I am not sure I can DIY without it leaking . I think RAH has one brand that does not leak, maybe he will jump in.
Do not judge me by the politicians in my City, State or Federal Government.

They are famous for getting a little trash in them to where they wont seal but a couple cycles and some water passing thru, like others said, would be about the only thing I would know to try.
All the really good ideas I've ever had came to me while I was milking a cow.

Is the pipe carbon steel or pvc? Put a flange and new valve downstream

The drain pipe is reinforced concrete pipe and it runs through the dam. I am afraid if i place another calve at the exit, I will undermine the dam if there are any imperfections in the drain pipe. I have tried opening and closing the drain several times to flush debris out but it doesn't help. The valve is at least 40 years old; I think the life span is over!
