Pond was good until the great muskrat invasion of 2020. The no good varmints riddled the dam with tunnels, and they must have dug into some old tree root voids.

Now I have some seeps where there were no seeps before the muskrats arrived. I've packed all of the tunnels that I was able to access with bentonite, and applied 25 ton
of 3"x6" crushed limestone to the water side of the dam. I have hopes that an application of SF on top of the rock will help to seal things back up.

Dilley, I agree on the hog exclusion. Just got to get my lazy butt up, round up grown Grandsons and get it done.

Don't know if any other members do leaf removal from their BOW, but in an attempt reduce leaves that will eventually become muck on the pond bottom, I've made multiple trips with a 8' kayak my wife gifted me last spring, this Fall. I use a couple different pool strainers and bring a 5-gallon bucket with me for the "harvest".

When we first bought the property I thought shading the pond water could benefit the summer water temps and provide some improved, lo-light environment for the LMB. Fast-forward 30+ years and growth of 10 to 15' saplings into mature trees, I now realize one should be very thoughtful about the quantity and type of trees located near the pond. Some of the trees were present when we purchased the residence, so I can't take ALL of the credit! Deciduous trees upwind and within 30' of the pond can be a big problem. My leaf harvest consists of Maple, Pin Oak, White pine (needles) and now Bald Cypress leaves. I made about half a dozen kayak trips in October and November combined for leaf removal from the pond surface. I estimate that I removed over 60 gallons (packed volume) of leaves from our 1/4 acre pond. The small size of the pond is part of the problem too, of course. I added aeration to the pond the summer of 2019 and I've seen a significant reduction in muck. It doesn't help, however, to have trees adding significant volumes of organic material to the pond every fall season. I now have earmarked three trees for removal next spring to reduce the organic material introduced into the pond which should reduce the number of Fall kayak trips for leaf removal.

Just be careful what you wish for with regards to shade trees planted near your BOW. 50' to 60' tall Maples and Oaks drop a LOT of leaves every year. And in the wrong location, many of the leaves will end up in your pond. And while paddling around in a kayak can be relaxing-- it's not as much fun scooping leaves from the pond surface from the kayak....

Refilled feeders in anticipation of trout stocking next week. Also put up posts around forage pond where we'll string up brightly colored twine across the water to deter cormorants. Great tip from a PB member!

I'm really blessed with good watershed, main BOW is full and overflow pipe is running. We saw a bald eagle flying across the pond, sight that always encourages us. Maybe even better, we saw no cormorants at all. How long that will last is anybody's guess. Expect Canada geese any time now. I dislike how they poo everywhere and snarf up fish food, but my wife loves their beauty & antics. We also observed tiny fish around dock, almost certainly CNBG spawned within the last few weeks. Beaver continues to wreak havoc on cattails, fine by me.

Limed a couple of weeks ago. As Bob L stresses, happy water is number one factor, without which none of the other stuff works. Still got so much to do, including felling trees into pond to create cover, adding grass carp to control bushy pondweed, but at least things are headed in the right direction.

Actually last night, but I pulled another dead HSB out of the pond. We lost them all this year due to blue/green algae and the heat, so we're starting over next spring. It's 2020, I would have expected no less.

Really sorry to hear that, Al. Is this the first year you've had a blue-green algae bloom?

Yep, and it's nothing to be played with. Some of my HSB were creeping up on 10#, and I lost about 5-6 years of growth. I'll restock, and not look back.

Are you sure it was the algae that killed your fish? I would suspect the water temp more. But I am just a farmer. In Nebraska we see blue green algae purty often and I didn't see dead fish.

Wow, sorry to hear that Al.

Seems like the more we push our ponds for production, the more we are on a knifes edge of being "too much".

I run into BG algae in the warm months of the year but surprised it is still a problem for you in December. But I guess we have had some unusually warm weather for this time of year. I noticed yesterday my FA on the bottom of the pond in shallow water is going gangbusters. Uggg. Makes me wonder what next spring will bring.

If the HSB were near 10 lbs and 6 years old they were near max life expectancy. Were there some young/small ones also?

nehunter, I'm pretty sure it was the combo of B/G algae and then sliding into the 95 degree plus surface summer water temps. I did have a biologist on site. My big pond's really shallow, and there was probably no where to retreat, and the HSB were struggling since late spring. The HSB that floated up looked pretty rough, and my WAG is that it was the last survivor. I had a couple of small HSB coming to food last month, then none since then.

My 2021 plan is to start from scratch with the pond water, make sure I get all the numbers good, then reaccess my fish plans. It's all about the water.

John, you're right, we do push our ponds. It's just the gamble we take.

Had another 25 ton load of 3x6 crushed limestone delivered this morning.

The last load covered ~2' above and below the full pool water line on the dam.
After eyeballing it for a few weeks I decided that more coverage below the water line would be a good thing.

I wonder how long it will take to hand toss 25 ton into the drink?

Eric, they were all the same age. I didn't ladder stock them because I was looking for those few( only 20 added) HSB that excelled, and not a steady HSB population. I also didn't want the forage base hammered by ladder stocking, and my LMB population made me leery of adding another top tier predator in volume. And you're correct, they were getting a little long in the tooth.

Got all the leaves mowed back into the woods, and dumped down 40 lbs of fescue seed in the bare spots. Not sure if it will come up in the spring, but I had the time now. Ha!
Water level is down 2’ as our drought continues.
Also saw a fish floating near the bank, but didn’t want to stop mowing. I went back later to see if it was one of my new HSB, but it was gone. 68 degrees here yesterday, maybe the turtles are active?[Linked Image from hosting.photobucket.com]

9 yr old pond, 1 ac, 15' deep.
RES, YP, GS, FHM (no longer), HBG (going away), SMB, and HSB (only one seen in 5 yrs) Restocked HSB (2020) Have seen one of these.
I think that's about all I should put in my little pond.

I knew you needed rain SG, so I ordered rock and made plans to install it over the weekend.

The rain started here five minutes after the dump truck pulled out.

AL, you lost all your HSB in the big pond?? That's a shame.

This appears to be the 1st day of total ice over on the pond. Had build up around the edges but not covered. I couldn't imagine being up by New York right now. Seeing pictures of like 44 inches of snow on the net. I dont recall it ever getting much pasted knee deep here. Hope everyone is staying safe and warm as possible out there.

Wonder how New Yorkers feel about those "snow will soon be a thing of the past" climate predictions?
