Quarter Acre was nice enough to share some over production on his crawdads. I put them in the pond and it looks like they are doing fine. Hoping my SMB will give them a chance to get established.
Thank you QA! Much appreciated.

Packed the last of the muskrat tunnels with bentonite and placed ~20 ton of 3x6 crushed limestone on the face of the dam.

I did a little fishing and looking for fish out of the boat. I caught a 4+- lb lmb and was happy to see it. After stocking 15 Grass carp over the past yr I found 10 grass carp, most all of them looked to be in the 3 to 4 lb range. I was happy to find them in the pond after the fish kill because I am still seeing quite a bit of bush pond weed in the pond. Lacking experience with grass carp i wished I knew how many to have where they did not eat all the plants. It is like being on a teeter totter when it comes to balance of fish and plants.

Just observed the leaves coming down. Weird fall weather had the leaves dumping down yesterday and today.
One of the downsides to a pond in the woods. Lots and lots of leaves. [Linked Image from hosting.photobucket.com]

Unfortunately, raking it out helps to spread it because the small pieces that are broken off will grow into whole plants.

Yeah I have heard that statement numerous times. So if I don't rake it then what? It doesn't grow? Being that it is fall and it appears that the growing has slowed, what does it hurt to rake it out? Also, by not raking I can not fish the areas taken over with the milfoil so darned if I do and darned if I don't. So to speak.

I hear you, Dean. Got bushy pondweed which does much the same. There are only a few solutions, some temporary.

First, kill it with herbicide. Second, stock grass carp (I assume they will eat it). Third, use dye to starve it of sunlight.

I used herbicide a few months ago, and have permission to stock grass carp.

There are folks who make a kind of pond blanket that blocks sunlight in a particular area. I got a couple, but never used them because herbicide took care of the problem. It won't solve the issue for the whole pond, but supposed to do well in opening up areas for fishing.

I do plan on beginning to treat with herbicide in the spring and I have stocked the pond with grass carp. I have not seen the results from them that I thought that I would. Or maybe they are eating in areas where I do not notice currently. I'm unsure if I should attempt to kill it all or if I should just treat the areas that would enhance the beauty as well as open up more fishing areas. Thoughts? From what I've read, doesn't a pond need vegetation to keep everything in balance? I attempted the pond dye and with the amount of flow through that I have I might as well purchased lotto tickets with the money and I don't play the lottery.

Take care of yourself Martin.

Dean, I have no vegetation in my ponds. I used some dye last year on a micro pond that I have but the pigs really solved the problem when they decided to make it a wading pool. And, I have a LOT of pigs and they are now keeping it so muddy that plants, including algae, won't grow. No fish currently in it anyway. I dyed it in the Spring to keep down mosquitos but the pigs muddied it enough so sunlight doesn't penetrate enough for bugs to survive or hatch.

Adding here. The veggies are mainly for small fish to escape predation until they get large enough to feed larger fish. That somewhat works but Lusk says that of all the eggs laid and hatched, only about 5% will reach maturity. They get eaten. And that's just Mama Nature( a cruel bitch) at work assuring that we don't get so many fish that an O2 crash occurs. However, that also is OK since fish lay an enormous of eggs.

I sometimes think about it like a rancher who plants grasses(hay) to feed cattle. The cows eat the grass and their manure feeds the grass and other plant life. If too many cows the grass gets over eaten, the sun bakes the ground, water runs off instead of soaking in and the guy has to buy supplemental grass(hay) to feed the cows. Much easier to sell off the calves , culling, when weaned than to attempt to reestablish the grass with too many mouths to feed. That's when he loses $$$. So the number one goal is to take care of the ponds and pasture environment and the fish and or cows will be fine.

Veggies don't do much for O2 generation. O2 mainly comes from wind wave action and sunshine with sunshine being the biggest contributor.

Martin, I'm sure you've heard this before, but please take plenty of vitamin D. Sunshine on skin is good, too. Baby aspirin has shown benefit against possible blood clots caused by covid, too, but you should consult with doctor before taking.

Checked a camera near my pond today. Piebald young buck on 11/9! First time to see him. We have 13" antler restrictions so hopefully no one kills him for a few years.
Yes, the feeder leg is crooked and needs to be replaced!

When I was feeding yesterday evening I noticed what at first appeared to be a FHM or GAM fleeing from a bigger fish that was looking for a fresh meal.

This thing would jump 3"-4" out of the water and travel almost a foot with each jump.

Its last jump was straight into the side of the floating dock, where it stuck.

I took a closer look and saw that it was a PK shrimp. I flicked him off the dock and he was immediately slurped up by a RES.

I didn't realize the PKs could move that fast.

And the wind was down so I was able to broadcast a heavy dose of SoilFloc on the new rip-rap, and about 4' out into the pond from the waterline.
I would wager that, for the moment, I own the slickest rocks in the county.

Augie, I must of missed something. I assume your pond is leaking since you're using Soilfloc? Is there a thread with more info about you using Soilfloc? I try to keep up with all the Soilfloc threads I can since I may want to try it someday.

I have so dang many pigs that I'm not seeing many deer.

First weekend of bow season, Grandson saw three bunches around a feeder. Make that 3 separate bunches. Deer leave in a hurry when they show up.

Dave,

The answer to this is build hog panels around your feeders. I use 11 panels and make a circle. I also cut the top square off so the fawns can jump it easily though that might not be necessary. Pigs don't hit it and honestly they vacate the property if neighbors of yours don't have them.

I'm in South Texas where there are hogs a plenty, but I rarely see them anymore. They've become more exotic because they can't get easy/free food.

Dilly, same here. In August and September we had 10,000 pics of hogs. Built a pen and zero now. While deer hunting there aren't any moving nearby.
