Temperatures have dipped considerably at night in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, in the past week and the fish (eight goldfish, one catfish) stopped eating, so I started winterization. I swapped out the pump/filter for a two pad aerator three days ago and last night I added a pond de-icer. We don't have below freezing yet but just to keep the pond at a more stable temperature. I woke up this morning to a dead catfish but the goldfish were alive and well. S/he (the catfish) had been lying on the cable of the pond de-icer last night so not sure if it got too close to it or whether it was water temp change or something else that did it in and the timing was just coincidence. Did I remove the filter too soon maybe? I put it back in today as the pond was getting a bit cloudy.

How old was the catfish, what is your water temp now, and how fast did the water temp change?
