We are on a small farm in eastern PA. I’d love to put a pond in but one of the necessities- water- isn’t exactly present on our land. We have it available to us in the form of rain and run off from our property. Is this even a feasible option to consider? We also have a well that would be near the pond site, but I’m a bit leery to even consider that was a water source. The positive is that where I am considering the pond is in fact a low lying area that does have some water held a few months out of the year.

Depends on size & depth of the projected pond, size of the watershed that would drain into it, expected rainfall, and how much clay is in the soil. A flowing creek or spring isn't always necessary, nor even desirable.

I had a pond built last year that is ~0.4A that fills exclusively by watershed.

It was finished a little over one year ago and has been a 11'+ full pool for the last three months.

Mine is about 2/3A and only filled by rainfall. I have right at 1.5A of runoff. It stays pretty full most of the year so far. When we get a good soaker rain it overfills. We don't have a well either.

Most ponds are filled by rainfall and the runoff. But, it is best and safest to assure that the runoff is all from your property. Electric costs generally make pumping from a well cost prohibitive.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

My last pond fills almost exclusively through subsurface water, but I cored the upper area to force the subsurface water to enter above the full pool level so the pond will not lose water during dry periods. It has not ever dropped more than a foot in its first 3 years. We have water permeable soil lenses and pockets that make pond building "interesting" on our place, but once built correctly, the ponds hold water great. Had to pull the backhoe out of one of these pockets on the pond currently under construction. Its kinda stressful during the builds...

A pond with an island creates more shoreline. Shorelines is where all the weeds and algae grow. An island in a pond creates a need for more aeration diffusers because water movement cannot go to the other side of the island.

I was really just being a smarta$$. But from above it would look pretty cool. Yes more shoreline more headaches (backaches from weedeatin). I wouldn't want one. I thought bout doing one in my but decide not 2. I didnt want to maintain it.
