Hello everyone! I've spent the last few weeks practicing google-fu on pond information and this forum keeps coming up over and over again so i decided to join this lovely community to ask for some help and advice. I'm buying some land in a very rural area of the Smoky Hills that's just lovely. It has some lovely wetland areas fed by both a seasonal creek and several springs that I really enjoy. However, there is an area that I DON'T enjoy were two creek beds converge and it turns into a stinking swamp. Draining the swamp would require the removal of a county road and extensive modification to the neighbors' pasture land. I've already checked with government offices and there are no restrictions on the property as it's not really considered a wetland or a swamp and unless I'm building a large dam or a very large pond i don't need state approval. I was hoping you guys could help me figure a way to deepen it into a small pond. I don't really want to put in a dam because that would flood out the trees, wetlands, and wash out the road. I think my only option would be to dig it out. Thoughts? Attached is an image from the road in question.

You can dig it out, but it is generally more expensive than building a dam. Of course, a lot depends on the topography and the soils.

Quite a challenge. Dozers need dry soil.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

If there's a way to move and a place to put the spoils, how about digging the pond with a trackhoe?
