3:30 this afternoon and after 3 solid days in mid 90"s air temp I used my floating swimming pool thermometer I have always used to test surface temp. In 3 foot of water it read 98.8* surface temp!!! Can that even be right?? I know at home,my neighbors house, and at my wifes office everyone has their central air set at 70* but the best any of us are doing right now indoor is 77*...AC running full blast!! Are my water temps possible?? I do have muddy water and I have always understood muddy water warms quicker than clear water but there is enough I don't know to start a whole new world!!

Dang James that’s warmish water for sure. Been 100 here last two days. We have a fully foamed house so 72 is where our AC is And keeps it . Glad we invested in foam

Pat my wifes office was the old Sabine County hospital doctors office right on the square in Hemphill, Tx. I know it doesn't have good insulation. My neighbor and I both live in 18 wide manufactured home but I added an addition of about 700 more square foot. I do have 2x6 walls and I did insulate the heck out of the add on room but I did not foam anything. Guess I should have. I even added an all white metal roof . Anyway, my fish are frying!! 100* water is too hot!!

Our barndaminium is 2700 sq ft and our light bill runs less than 150 in the summer usually 120 so I’m sold on spray foam

I remember when I was a kid we were haying on a terribly hot day handling small square bales. Neighbors pond looked inviting so we jumped the fence and went swimming. It was a cow pond and stirred up to the point of chocolate milk color.

The top inch was so hot it felt like boiling water. Couldn't stand it. But the water below it was cool. As soon as it was mixed a little it was fine.

A pond can have two thermoclines if it is really muddy. One very shallow right near the surface that heats up quickly and also cools down the same I would presume at night. Out in that pond in deeper water there was a second thermocline of really cold water about 5' down.

Flame, can you weight you thermos and get it to bottom in say- 6ft of water??
Let it sent on bottom for 3-5 min, rip it in and read quickly, maybe subtract 1-2 degs for ripping it up through warmer water/air.
My pond is about 52 at the 10' mark but 86 on the surface.

Snipe, I can try to weight it down. What other type thermometer is everyone using?

I have one that is digital attached to a probe that can be dropped into deeper water. I purchased one that is a DO/temp meter that no longer works on the DO side but the temp still works. Made in china crap. Or take a gal wide mouth jar, turn it upside down, dive to the deeper water turn the jar up and gather water and if you can hold your breath long enough then screw on the lid and swim the the surface, measure temp. Not a perfect way but it will work, I've done it. smile

$3 pool thermometer from Walmart (the floating type) tied to some good cord with a large nut to make it sink. I also tied a small Gatorade bottle to the cord about 12 feet from the thermometer (my pond is 10 foot deep). This keeps the cord off the bottom to avoid snags and would make for retrieval if I accidentally let go of the cord when throwing it out.

John

I don't think I've ever been uncomfortable enough while putting up hay to go swimming in a "chocolate milk" colored cow pond sick laugh

That's normal pond water around these parts. Especially after it gets stirred up.
