Yesterday, I just sat and watched the feeder go off at 6:45. (AM)
Cleaned up the food in about 2 minutes. Amazingly peaceful morning.

The five previous days were very busy, with grandkids and their parents. Too much fun. Son in law, has gone crazy over SMB. I hear him holler every time he gets one on. The water is a little clearer than years past, and he can see their shadows beneath the surface. Hopefully they won’t get too hook shy...

Setterguy, I think if you look up in the dictionary what a pond is meant to be you will find a picture of your scenario there, quiet peaceful mornings and enjoyed to the max by everybody on a beautiful weekend, fishing swimming and camaraderie, family time!!
In this area people spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for a cabin on the Lake Of the Ozarks, and if you dont spend nearly that much on a boat you will get turned over in the wake of a 100,000.00 dollar boat, the surface gets so rough you cant enjoy fishing or anything,, sorta makes the money we do spend on our private little fishing honey hole, playground a little more reasonable,,, and Ill take the privacy every time.

All the really good ideas I've ever had came to me while I was milking a cow.

110% this right here.

On that note, yesterday we bought a molded jon boat for our little slice of paradise...but evidently there has been a run on oars during Coronatine so the little trolling motors had to make due with halves of a small kayak oar.

Thanks all. It was a very good time. Strange benefit to the lockdown..

One last pic. This guy is five and a half. He put on a little GSH, cast it out, set the hook, and reeled it in. And released it..

That's what its all about

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

That is a tough little kid. I lipped a bass like that the other day, it flipped and it shredded my thumb with its teeth!

In addition to the normal feed the fish routine, we went swimming yesterday. 75° surface temp.
Daughter and I stayed in for quite awhile. We thought it felt great. Florida cracker Mrs. Augie got right back out. "It's too cold!"

While out there I noticed a healthy crop of FA growing on the bottom.
Gonna give it another dose of Cutrine+ this evening.

After a successful bass trip, my left thumb tends to get shredded & eventually begins to peel. Tried gloves, but didn't help much. What did was to wash thoroughly, then treat area with a topical antibiotic like neosporin. Skin heals quickly, no peeling.

Harvested five more LMB, now ninety for the year. Need to take out total of 200 plus, so have quite a ways to go. CNBG are monsters, even "small" 8 inchers are built like sumo wrestlers. A blast on light tackle!

My switch to summer feeding schedule looks successful. Six and nine am, then 8pm. Fish still feed eagerly in the shade, not quite so much in sunshine.

No giants this time, though I did hook a runaway freight truck at dusk. Ripped drag off like it was headed to Louisiana down Interstate 20, then the hook came out. Possibly a monster bass, or hybrid striper. Huge, whatever it was. If HSB, I'm kinda glad the hook pulled out, as the fight probably would have killed it.

Bushy pondweed still growing, a real nuisance in many areas.

Frank, you mentioned the bushy pondweed being a nuisance, I couldn't agree more! It is a pretty invasive plant at my pond. And I am not a fan of the plant even though I can see where a small amount of it might be beneficial but from my experience with it there is no way you can have a small amount of it. Another thing I have noticed is for some reason this year it seems to have become a problem in many ponds. I have not noticed many comments on it here till this year. I plan of spot treating but have been holding off till I found and repaired my leak in the aeration system. I found the leak yesterday afternoon. As a side note. When I discussed treating the BPW with Todd Overton, he told me that if I were to treat a larger sized area like a qtr of the pond, I could still kill off fish and he did not think the bottom diffusers would help in that situation. But I am thinking the aeration is better than not having it when it comes to spot treating. I have been talking with Al for designing a spay system to use when treating of killing off the BPW. He has been very helpful. Warm water temps and treating BPW can kill off the fish. That sucks because the stuff is so invasive.

I hear you, Tracy. First noticed bushy pondweed running wild last year, but it's maybe even worse this time.

With temps in upper 90s I'm leery of even spot killing BP. Rain has finally ceased, too, which means more stagnant water.

How are your grass carp doing? Have you seen them taking feed? That's one thing that worries me, they might push aside other fish on my feeding program.

I have not seen any of the 15 that have been added. 10 last fall and 5 this May. Sure hope they make a dent in the BPW. They should grow fat and sassy, lots for them to eat in the pond. I am looking forward to the days they can control the BPW and if that ever happens then I won't mind a little BOW Hunting/fishing to remove some of the larger ones that take up water space in the pond. I may have to remove some and add some younger ones. Until then, I am just watching to see what the GC do in my pond. I never thought I would ever add GC to my pond because their bad reputation in some of the TX lakes.

Frustrated today... Often this time of year a pair of Goose and young will show up at my pond as a rest stop. We harass them the best we can to make them know they are not welcome and then the next day they usually are gone. They are very determined to not leave during day time hours and I think this is because the young cannot fly yet and have to leave on foot (by cover of night?) Then yesterday we literally had about 40 geese several 'families' and many young. We tried the typical harassment techniques including sending our dog in and using noise, water, blunt projectiles, splashes, noise, light... I was hoping they would get the hint over night but no luck this morning. I guess we go to the same techniques for another day and hope they get the point. Maybe they have to rest a bit before moving? We aren't giving them any time for rest and I'm not sure what the little ones are eating when they stay huddled in the middle of the pond....

I wouldn't mind them so much except for the amount of excrement in my pond is going to be large and last time this happened I was stuck with a nasty pond infestation of eurasian milfoil (or at least it is convenient to blame them for it...)

Good luck with them CC. I hope there’re gone soon. I don’t think geese like my little BOW. It’s surrounded by tall trees. Not easy for them to fly in and out of. Mixed blessing, those trees.

We got ~2.5" rain from the remnants of TS Cristobal. Pond ran over the spillway all day yesterday. I picked up a couple dozen baby RES from the yard yesterday evening and tossed em back into the pond. Picked up another half dozen that were still kicking on my lunch break today.

The mini-B trap is proving to be very effective at catching small sunfish. With it setting on the bottom of the pond in 3'-4' water I was collecting mostly young RES, so I decided to see what would happen if I suspended it with the top just barely under the surface. Done that way I'm collecting 90%+ BG/HBG, with the occasional RES and GSH mixed in. I never used any bait when I was soaking it on the bottom, but I've found that with it up top it's more effective if I toss in a piece of bread crust.

Bushy Pond weed took over my RES/SMB pond last year. I would estimate 40-50% coverage. Put 4 grass carp in the 1 acre pond last fall. Most of it is gone today. I don't know if the grass carp did it in, the FA got the upper hand or just conditions were not conducive to it this year. Or a combination of the above. But at least to date it is in remission. I can still retrieve it on my hook when fishing so it is still there to some degree. But all around the bank where it was thick to the surface is gone. I can see out into the water now and can't see any of it.

I'm starting to wish I had only put in 3 GC per acre rather than the 4.

Last year I had dyed the pond heavily early in the season, thinking I could keep the FA and BPW in regression. The BPW had been somewhat bad the year before but not covered the pond like last year. Well I think what I did was suppress the FA and that let the BPW go gangbusters. Bob Lusk had been up that year for my get together and showed us that the FA was competing with the BPW as the FA was covering some of it and shading it out. Well when I suppressed the FA the BPW had nothing holding it back. This year I have a little FA around the banks but nothing serious. I don't mind a little around the edges as it gives the YOY fry some refuge area.

When a person controls one thing, sometimes something else worse takes its place.

John, that's a good point about FA and BPW competing with each other. I'm wondering if I made a mistake stocking TP. Maybe they can do more harm than good when they eat the algae in a BOW with abundant bushy pondweed.

I've asked permission to put in 24 grass carp to help control BPW, 3 per acre. Probably will need more, but based on what I've read it's smarter to undershoot than overshoot. Also investigating the intriguing possibility of a lake mat to spot control BPW. Eric West clued me in on this idea, gonna check it out. Hopefully I can also do a drawdown this fall/winter. Tried & failed last year, but now I have a better game plan.

I have considered a lake matt but I was thinking of using a tarp, staked out to where it blocked all the sunlight under the tarp. But, I started with 3 and a third grass carp per acre last fall but added an additional five of them to the pond recently. I added them because I was loosing ground and gaining BPW with the mild winter we had this year. It covers at least 50% of the pond and I see it growing even in the deepest part of the pond. I am no fan. Snrub, hope my GC put a good dent in my bpw like they did yours.

Milder winters rather than torrid summers is most climate change in the US, so this trend may continue. Also, long term rise in atmospheric CO2 probably encourages aquatic plant growth, just as it does to plants on land. Would love to see an article or two on these topics. Previous emphasis was on higher summer temps, up to 14 F increase (!), but that's not likely to happen in the foreseeable future.

Lake mats are like grass carp in that they work best early on, but I'm gonna give it a try anyhow. Open up areas for predators to get at forage, and creates edges which LMB love. The mat guy did tell me that it is possible to get a hook stuck in the fabric, though.

I waved goodbye to some of my RES on a long journey north today. I also caught one of the walleye I stocked last fall.

Shorty, what did the walleye bite on? What was the size/condition or growth since stocking? I'm curious how walleye due on pond and what they will eat in your pond.
