John, when I look at your panfish I see some red trim around the tail fin? I saw the same thing on a large panfish swimming in my pond. I thought it was a Tp that survived the winter but now I am wondering if it was an res hybred of some sort. Is the tail trimmed red as seen on the pictured panfish?

I would think that is from the GSF influence rather than the RES, but I could be wrong on that. A lot of my hybrids with GSF have yellow borders on the fins.

Thanks John, I don't have any green sunfish and after seeing your pictured fish, I did not consider a hybrid fish was maybe what I saw since the Tp are not supposed to survive our winters. Even though this winter was pretty mild. I can not rule out a Tp was what I saw, but hybrid maybe possible I guess? This fish I saw had to be in the 12 to 14" size range, has me stumped till I can catch it.

You know, Tracy, most of the warming we've experienced has been during the winter, not summer. I'd love to see an article about the effects of milder winters on fishery management. For sure a plus in some aspects, a negative in others. We've had a couple of PB articles about hotter summers, but that's not mostly what is happening.

Nice Fish. Did all those SMB originally come from the forage pond or the the main bow?

We were fishing in the RES/SMB pond where SMB were originally stocked. I would guess the one she caught to be an original stocked fish.

We caught and transferred probably 75 total now to other ponds. Mainly our main 3 acre pond but also some to the old refurbished pond. We catch SMB regularly now out of the main pond also.

We finally have gotten some recruitment of LMB in our main pond so I suspect by next year we will be harvesting both LMB and SMB before they become too plentiful. If they haven't already.

This RES/SMB pond really cranks out the SMB recruits. Whatever I accidentally did right, they sure do spawn in this pond.

Caught three RES in a row out of this pond late afternoon the other day. Was pleasantly surprised. Not big ones. I think the biggest was 6".

Watched today just before lunch a number of RES males on nests in less than a foot of water. A smaller female was bouncing around from nest to nest. She finally picked one and her and the male went round and round spawning circling within the confines of the nest.

Pretty cool.

The RES in my pond are on the beds now too. I haven't caught them doing the circle thing though. That would be neat to watch.

What amazed me was how shallow they were. The one male could actually see its dorsal fin break the water surface at times. Beds were in less than a foot water.

Did some cast net throws away from the beds. Got a few medium size RES and in one honey hole got about 10 2-3" RES in one cast. A few small SMB also.

Mine started about 7-8 days ago snrub. I too was amazed at how shallow they are-maybe 10-12" at most. I never seen beds last year that shallow. So much we don't know...

All the males I saw shallow were of medium size. Guessing 6-7" and the one female I saw actually spawning was smaller.

It made me wonder if some larger males were adjacent to them out in slightly deeper water that I could not see. The age of the pond I should have some 8+" redear in there, but have not caught nor seen one yet.

Did catch a 9+" RES/GSF hybrid the other day though. I have most of the hybrids cleaned out but still catch one once in a while. Good news is of all the fingerling RES I have sampled all looked pure RES. So maybe the hybrids did not get off a spawn. Have never caught anything but big hybrids. Never what appeared to be from a spawn.

Hopefully the single CNBG male I put in there earlier is on a nest somewhere and will give me some CNBG/RES hybrids. I wanted to get the GSF influence out of the pond but I would like to have the small mouth CNBG/RES hybrids. A few at least. Don't want them to become the dominant sunfish.

Neat looking fish John

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Caught two more hybrids from this pond and they are in the holding pen to be invited to supper. They are such nice fish kind of hated to pull them out, but I really do not want the GSF/RES hybrids in this specific pond. Other ponds it would be fine. About 10" and 1.2#. Caught a second one almost identical to the one pictured.

Lots of baby SMB in this pond. While standing along the bank fishing can see 3" ones and a few 4" passing by in small schools in shallow water. Their black tail marking makes them stand out compared to the Gams also in the shallow water.

The SMB seem to be doing pretty well, although this one looks a little skinny. Maybe a female after spawn? I did not weigh it. The one pictured is about as big as any I have caught. Have removed a lot of smaller and medium sized ones to give more resources to the ones remaining, but with all the fingerlings I am seeing it remains to be seen if it helps. They have been coming for feed very well lately.

Did catch one RES out of this pond and a smaller one.

Saw three of the four GC I put in the pond last fall and they have about denuded the pond of the bushy pond weed. I need to get a couple of them out I think. Now they have become pellet trained and are pellet hogs.

I don't feel that SMB looks skinny, snrub.. I think mouth position makes the pic look slightly distorted but doesn't look unhealthy to me.

John,

That RES/GSF is a very robust and handsome fish. Like Snipe, I thought the SMB looks healthy also.
