John, when I look at your panfish I see some red trim around the tail fin? I saw the same thing on a large panfish swimming in my pond. I thought it was a Tp that survived the winter but now I am wondering if it was an res hybred of some sort. Is the tail trimmed red as seen on the pictured panfish?

I would think that is from the GSF influence rather than the RES, but I could be wrong on that. A lot of my hybrids with GSF have yellow borders on the fins.

Thanks John, I don't have any green sunfish and after seeing your pictured fish, I did not consider a hybrid fish was maybe what I saw since the Tp are not supposed to survive our winters. Even though this winter was pretty mild. I can not rule out a Tp was what I saw, but hybrid maybe possible I guess? This fish I saw had to be in the 12 to 14" size range, has me stumped till I can catch it.

You know, Tracy, most of the warming we've experienced has been during the winter, not summer. I'd love to see an article about the effects of milder winters on fishery management. For sure a plus in some aspects, a negative in others. We've had a couple of PB articles about hotter summers, but that's not mostly what is happening.

Nice Fish. Did all those SMB originally come from the forage pond or the the main bow?

We were fishing in the RES/SMB pond where SMB were originally stocked. I would guess the one she caught to be an original stocked fish.

We caught and transferred probably 75 total now to other ponds. Mainly our main 3 acre pond but also some to the old refurbished pond. We catch SMB regularly now out of the main pond also.

We finally have gotten some recruitment of LMB in our main pond so I suspect by next year we will be harvesting both LMB and SMB before they become too plentiful. If they haven't already.

This RES/SMB pond really cranks out the SMB recruits. Whatever I accidentally did right, they sure do spawn in this pond.

Caught three RES in a row out of this pond late afternoon the other day. Was pleasantly surprised. Not big ones. I think the biggest was 6".

Watched today just before lunch a number of RES males on nests in less than a foot of water. A smaller female was bouncing around from nest to nest. She finally picked one and her and the male went round and round spawning circling within the confines of the nest.

Pretty cool.

The RES in my pond are on the beds now too. I haven't caught them doing the circle thing though. That would be neat to watch.

What amazed me was how shallow they were. The one male could actually see its dorsal fin break the water surface at times. Beds were in less than a foot water.

Did some cast net throws away from the beds. Got a few medium size RES and in one honey hole got about 10 2-3" RES in one cast. A few small SMB also.

Mine started about 7-8 days ago snrub. I too was amazed at how shallow they are-maybe 10-12" at most. I never seen beds last year that shallow. So much we don't know...

All the males I saw shallow were of medium size. Guessing 6-7" and the one female I saw actually spawning was smaller.

It made me wonder if some larger males were adjacent to them out in slightly deeper water that I could not see. The age of the pond I should have some 8+" redear in there, but have not caught nor seen one yet.

Did catch a 9+" RES/GSF hybrid the other day though. I have most of the hybrids cleaned out but still catch one once in a while. Good news is of all the fingerling RES I have sampled all looked pure RES. So maybe the hybrids did not get off a spawn. Have never caught anything but big hybrids. Never what appeared to be from a spawn.

Hopefully the single CNBG male I put in there earlier is on a nest somewhere and will give me some CNBG/RES hybrids. I wanted to get the GSF influence out of the pond but I would like to have the small mouth CNBG/RES hybrids. A few at least. Don't want them to become the dominant sunfish.

Neat looking fish John

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Caught two more hybrids from this pond and they are in the holding pen to be invited to supper. They are such nice fish kind of hated to pull them out, but I really do not want the GSF/RES hybrids in this specific pond. Other ponds it would be fine. About 10" and 1.2#. Caught a second one almost identical to the one pictured.

Lots of baby SMB in this pond. While standing along the bank fishing can see 3" ones and a few 4" passing by in small schools in shallow water. Their black tail marking makes them stand out compared to the Gams also in the shallow water.

The SMB seem to be doing pretty well, although this one looks a little skinny. Maybe a female after spawn? I did not weigh it. The one pictured is about as big as any I have caught. Have removed a lot of smaller and medium sized ones to give more resources to the ones remaining, but with all the fingerlings I am seeing it remains to be seen if it helps. They have been coming for feed very well lately.

Did catch one RES out of this pond and a smaller one.

Saw three of the four GC I put in the pond last fall and they have about denuded the pond of the bushy pond weed. I need to get a couple of them out I think. Now they have become pellet trained and are pellet hogs.

I don't feel that SMB looks skinny, snrub.. I think mouth position makes the pic look slightly distorted but doesn't look unhealthy to me.

John,

That RES/GSF is a very robust and handsome fish. Like Snipe, I thought the SMB looks healthy also.

Thanks. I was very pleased. Kind of hated to remove from the pond but it was in the wrong pond. It went to the fillet pen and got sacrificed this morning.

Decided to do some cast net sampling in this RES/SMB pond just to see what I would come up with. Could not believe it when I started pulling up adult SMB with my tiny 6' cast net. Not just a few either. One cast I pulled up three at once with one about a foot long and the other two 15" or better. Continued around the bank and would get at least one that size in every cast. Would occasionally pull up a fingerling RES also with them. I guess they got used to me feeding them by hand around the pond and had come up close to shore waiting for feed.

I expected to get a few 6" SMB and hoped to get some RES but could not believe I got around 10 adult SMB in short order. Went on around the pond and found an area where I finally started getting some RES in higher numbers. A couple medium size ones and finally hit a honey hole where I pulled up quite a few RES fingerlings. Was glad to see that because it means they had a successful spawn earlier.

Forgot my phone that outing so no pictures. I wanted to get the big SMB back in the water ASAP anyway. Just took a quick glance at them and opened the net back up and into the water.

John,
Have you had enough rain to keep the ponds reasonably full?

We have had enough runoff to fill the small forage and sediment ponds which feed into the main pond, but the main pond is about 10" low as is both my old refurbished pond and the RES/SMB pond. Rainfall amounts have had only a small amount of runoff. We need a good general soaking rain but of course that is unusual for this time of year for this area.

I would say that pond levels are about what I would expect for this time of year, down somewhat but not severely. Water quality is still pretty good.

In down just about a foot from full pool. It's also the 1st year it's been able to fill so I'm surprised its stayed that full really.

I have redear out the ears.

Not only did my forage pond spawn a bunch of new RES babies but this RES/SMB pond must have had a great spawn too.

Have been seeing some baby 2-3" long SMB in a shallow area I drive across with my UTV. So I'm thinking, I'll trap a few of those small bass and move them to my sediment pond to grow out. So I put a couple traps in the water, checked them a little while later and not a single bass but look what was trapped. Loads of 1-2" RES. That is the only sunfish in this pond other than the one lone BG male I put in this summer. So presumably some could be RESxBG hybrids. But based on how many I trapped out of my forage pond (that only has pure RES for sure) I am pretty sure these are mostly if not all RES.

I have trapped a half dozen batches like the one in the picture. Transferred them to my sediment pond, main pond and old pond to reinforce the RES populations there. Most will probably get eaten (except in the forage pond which has few if any predators currently) but a few will surely survive.

Have yet to get one of the numerous SMB fry to go into the traps but do get a few gams.

Welllllll, kind of. Kind of not.

I had a couple low spots out in the terrace that comes out of that field that was holding water making farming through them not so nice. So to make sure they drained I took some dirt out of the bottom of the channel all the way to the pond.

The field terrace drains now but I kind of exchanged the low spots in the field for a low spot leading into the pond. So when the pond is at full pool (probably 4" down now) there will be water in that area.

So originally when I was setting the overflow pipe to match the full pool level I wanted for the pond, no that area was not designed to have water in it. But to correct a couple low spots in the field at a later date, yes it was.

I put the full pool level as high as I could get it for maximum pond depth and still stay about 30' from the edge of the field. A pretty tight tolerance.

As it turns out it is a really good refuge for fingerling fish. See loads of gams out there, SMB fry and the RES. I kind of like it for that reason (birds like killdeer and other predators like it too). So I could continue to use the area as a road for my UTV I dug out about 6" deep where you see the crushed rock and put back in large rock then topped with smaller rock. I drive right through the 4-6" deep water now.

Tonight I finally did trap a single SMB fingerling about 2" long. Along with ever smaller RES.
