Hi All

1 acre pond, 8’ deep, western N.Y. 20 years old.

Pond is stocked with bluegills, a few pumpkin seeds and a bunch of shiners that I have no idea of their origin.

Just in the last few weeks I’ve noticed spots or areas on some of my sunfish where it appears that their slime has worn off, for lack of better description. The fish are active and feeding well but don’t look good at all. So far it’s only a few and some just have a few spots on their back while others look like they’re molting. Nobody has been fishing here, pond is right behind my house (30 feet) but that’s what it looks like to my inexperienced eye, that someone caught them and wiped their protective covering off.

I’m going to try to catch the ones I can and remove them. Is there anything else I can do and any idea what I’m dealing with?

If they are active and feeding you are likely ok. Try and post a pic. Winter can be hard on fish and stressed fish can have problems like what you described.
