I am planning to add more structure to my pond mostly to give the small baitfish a place to hide. Currently my pond has very few weeds and some rock and brush cover. Is there anything wrong with making two or three areas that are protected with chicken wire ? Figure the little guys can pass through and the big guys can’t.

I have seen rolls/wads of old woven wire used and that works well. Loosely rolled or wadded chicken wire would work for smaller fish, but would not last very long as it would rust away in a few years.

My worry would be a small bass or 10 would find their way thru the chicken wire, and after a month or so would be too large to swim back out.

I used chicken wire to protect some water lilies last spring and this spring when I pulled it out I was surprised at how much it had corroded. Probably would not have made it another year.

Just get the PVC coated wire. It should last for quite a while.

Like QA, I like wadded up chicken wire.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.
