Greetings and thanks for having me as a member.

2 and a half years ago I purchased a 56 acre parcel in sand country , central Wisconsin.
The land was used as a Scots pine Christmas tree plantation up till the late 90's and at that time sold. The land sat unused with no absolutely no land management practices taking place until the time I purchased it.
I have embarked on a journey to establish oak/savanna/prairie. The bulk of that project has been completed including forestry mulching/invasive plant control and 26 acres of native seeding.

While the land is comprised of loamy sand I know I will have a big challenge putting in a small pond.
I hope to learn, and get advice and suggestions from this community on this forum.

Nothing wrong with sandy loam. Just depends on the % of each. Actually, pure clay doesn’t work well for a dam due to drying and cracking.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Thanks for the Welcome Dave!

When we did the soil test according to soil triangles my soil is loamy sand, 80 percent sand.

I plan on doing much reading here and then I will may start a post with my plans for the small pond along with more details on the soil and topography etc.

Did you have test holes dug in the area you want the pond.

I have three possible pond sites on the property. The one I am leaning towards has not had a test hole dug. With experience now on the land and looking at historical soil type surveys I am not expecting to find any thing other than loamy sand.
Last summer I had a local excavating company with experience installing ponds come out to do a site survey. To be fair he did not bore any test holes but did say my options was either a trucked in clay liner or artificial liner.

I have scaled back the size of the pond as its intended to be a wildlife attracting feature rather than a fishing, swimming or landscape feature. I now have larger equipment and was going to attempt the dig and lining myself.

Bob, as a side note I see your from Jefferson County. I ran a gunshop/indoor range in Imperial from 1984 to 2002. Jefferson County is a pretty county!
