Many Thanks everyone for the input, thats why I asked.
My goals for the pond arent huge, I am mostly a BC fisherman but I do want to be able to go out and do some good bass fishing, when I have a place where I can go out and land half a dozen 6# plus lmb or smb and all the crappy I can eat I am a extremely happy camper,, that being said I also have an interest in trying to accommodate handicapped, and all kids, and have them be able to go out and land a mess of bass and crappie and also some rambunctious bluegill is always a hit for a kid.
I never thought about the bluegill eliminating the yoy of the bass I introduce if I under stock. my concern would be if I fully stock them in recommended amounts, am I not short stocked on baitfish, since it was only half stocked? and would the fact that the bluegill have unlimited access to other baitfish fry such and FH minnows and such improve the survival rate of some of my bass yoy?

Again, I greatly appreciate the feedback, It is extremely helpful from people with experience!
I had a friend that had a pond built 20 years ago and him not being a fisherman just had the conservation dept stock it, now whether they were really good at it, or whether it was sort of a fluke, that pond had within a few short years some of the best fishing around, a really nice balance of fish, very impressive and extremely fun to fish, it has since been pretty much destroyed by an overgrowth of lotus and then afterwards had cattle directly in it, which is what the pond was built for in the first place, cattle water, although earlier they were served by a tank behind the pond till he had pipe problems and then turned the cattle directly into the pond, its kinda sad to go by and see 80 head of cattle using the pond for a big cooling tub in the summer,,, but then I do like beef too,,, they just a little more unpredictable when you get them on a hook.
Thanks again! didnt mean to hijack the whole thread, it was just a question that I was curious about.

gehajake, that you stocked around 190 BG per acre did not go unnoticed by me. I don't however think you are under stocked for standard stocking of LMB. The 190/acre grew rapidly should be breeding come spring if they were not in September. They will produce prodigious quantities of fry next year and probably more than if you had stocked at twice the rate. In a hatchery setting, 40 pairs or about 30 - 40 lbs of adults is optimum for producing fingerlings. There will be plenty of food next year. It will be subsequent years that will be limiting if only because the LMB will be much larger.

To have LMB yoy the first obstacle is a successful spawn. BG would like to eat the eggs in the LMB nest and if the BG cause enough damage and wear the male LMB down ... there is a good chance he will abandon the nest and all will be lost. The LMB fry themselves, though some will be eaten by BG, would probably recruit sufficiently provided they swim up and reach the stage they are fending for themselves.

The bg I stocked were just a few weeks from spawning when I put them in in May, according to my fish supplier, and he was correct, in no time I had tons of bg beds in medium shallow areas, I am convinced they spawned several times last yr already.

Based on what you just wrote and that there were no predators present this year ... I think your BOW qualifies as a 16 acre forage pond packed to the gills with forage.

Question about the lake. We have suspended solids in Lake to the point where it hasn't cleared up in over a year. The visibility is really low, maybe a few inches at best. Will lime make the solids settle? We have got to do something to get the lake clearer than it currently is. Biologist from south eastern said get the water right before we spend any more money on the lake as far as fish goes.
I need to know if anyone else has experienced this issue before. Thanks

scampbell, you might try testing some bottled pond water with some gypsum. If it clears overnight, you may have a solution.

See the minimum amount of gypsum necessary to clear a set volume of pond water, then multiply that by your estimated total pond volume. If it takes .01 pound of gypsum to clear 1 gallon, and your pond has 1 million gallons, then 1 million times .01 equals 10,000 pounds, or five tons.

Can someone explain what happens scientifically that makes liming or gypsum work in a suspended solid situation?
I pulled some samples from the lake and wanted to test it out with applying lime to one and gypsum to another. But was wondering am I liming to cover the lake bottom and that settles the solids from being to act freely, or does the lime neutralize the solids as it goes to the bottom?
Just hope I don't end up with a 50 mud hole.
Thanks for the feedback guys.

This may not be very scientific answer for you but in layman's terms, picture a microscopic particle of clay floating in the water. By adding Gyp and or lime will cause the particle to swell and become heavier sinking to the bottom. Using lime will be cheaper but gyp will work better. And then there is Alum/lime treatments for clearing water.

That makes sense. I sure hope it works. I don't think there is another option from here. It's not going clear up on its on I don't believe.

I prefer to use aluminum sulfate along with hydrated lime as a buffering agent.

If it's clay, then it is staying suspended in the water by the ionic inbalance in the water between the clay and the water.
