Bob-O, your credentials are impressive!!

I've seen folks who are moderators as listed under their name. There are even a few people who are Moderators AND Lunkers (how do you become a Lunker on this site?)

But you are a Lunker AND an Ambassador AND a Field Correspondent.

So how did you get those titles and I'm sure there is a story behind this...

Why are new members not becoming Lunkers or correspondents?

or are there strings 'attached' to these titles?

Did a little fishing and turned the aeration and feeder back on today.

Just run the aeration about 4 hours during the heat of the day.

I had turned the feeder off when the cold snap came through because of no interest. Been off three days. Did a test throw today out of the feeder and they were hitting the feed pretty hard. So I set it back on for mid day three throws of about 8 seconds each. I'll leave it on as long as we are in a warming spell and probably turn it back off the next cold snap. The smaller CC were also feeding today, which surprised me.

Hybrids and BG were biting decent today, and that was after three feedings. Caught one nice male BG. Probably caught 15 fish in about 45 minutes.

CC,

Moderators are hand picked by Bob L. and are under appreciated policeman of the forum in my opinion!

Near as I can figure, the practice of recognizing other members with the other titles, as well as Hall of Fame stars, died out on the forum several years ago. Maybe as the forum grew it became too big a chore/cost to recognize individual members and add those titles?

Maybe one of the mods will see this post and chime in with the actual explanation.

As I recall,,, the events BillD. has a good explanations of Moderator and Lunkers monikors. Lunker title was discontinued because it was though it became competitive and personal feelings were getting disrupted. I think Ambassador, that meant active promoter of the Forum, is no longer used.

I was disappointed when the special titles were nixed. I asked for Lunker, but Bob L said there were plenty of those already. But he did promise that I could have Lunkhead all to myself!

This past weekend we had a bald eagle visit.
Maybe it knows Tilapia funerals are around the corner?

Albino Cat Pond looking cool yesterday morning
took one otter shot here

Re-naming this "otter creek".

bad news...I saw 4 otters sunday morning at day break.
no wonder fishing had declined slightly recently
took two shots with AR-15
missed first shot
think I wounded or killed 1 otter with 2nd shot
he jumped out of the water into the air looking pained
but never saw body...would an otter for sure float if I killed him?
licensed trapper buddy already has 9 traps set

Fishing has never been about the fish....

I was happy the first time an Eagle showed up at the pond but not so much when it stayed for about 3 months. A mature eagle can remove a good sized fish. Same with the Osprey that showed up last year but seem to remove smaller fish than the eagle. And then add a few otters that show up from time to time. And yes they do show up for the slow moving Tp this time of year. I love to see them but don't like it when the stay for long periods of time. And Zep, I'm also hunting otters at the pond right now in the evenings and at daybreak yesterday. Good Picture ZEP.

My ponds are primarily for wildlife, so I don't mind sharing the fish with whatever shows up. I do take exception to beavers clogging the drain pipe. Need to place large chunks of concrete around pig-panel guard to keep them from digging under it. Bricks are not heavy enough. They are persistent critters! Not happy with them cutting bald cypress either. Fortunate that neighbor trapped out 4 in the last week. Might still be one left, but we will see if drain continues to be blocked. Clearing it every day is no fun.

Do you have spare metal fence posts or cattle panels?

You can fence off the whole thing -- google beaver deceiver. Cold water installation not recommended laugh

The 4 river otters currently at my pond between them can consume up to 12 lbs of fish per day. 360 lbs of fish a month. With the cost of fish stocking that can run into some money if they stick around very long. 2EachHisOwn but they are not welcome at my pond and will be killed whenever possible.

The beaver dug under the pig/cattle panels. I only stocked each pond with each species one time. None of my species of fish has ever been eradicated by the wildlife. Sometimes it takes a while for the big ones to be replaced though. I don't ask anyone to manage their ponds as I do. Just sharing my perspective. I did take exception to the beavers and am fortunate to have a neighbor who enjoys trapping. No otters yet, but the populations are growing in the state.

I hand feed my fish. Lately they have been eating a whole bunch. I had been expecting to save some $$ over the winter but so far these guys have only slowed down during a couple of cold snaps.

They have moved out to slightly deeper water, not much going on near shore. And on colder days they go for the sinking pellets first then bolt to the surface and dive right back down to warmer water. Sometimes they breach like a whale.

I checked water (surface) temps today. 70F.

The local ranchers have a saying - "What you get in the Spring depends on what you feed in the Winter". I expect it holds for fish too, at least here in the South.

4 acre pond 32 ft deep within East Texas (Livingston) timber ranch. Filled (to the top of an almost finished dam) by Hurricane Harvey 9/17. Stocked with FHM, CNBG, RES 10/17. Added 35lbs RSC 3/18. 400 N LMB fingerlings 6/18

Turned my feeder back off today after doing a test throw. Been feeding the last few days. Lots of activity so I gave them a good feeding but supposed to get freezing cold for a day or two. So it will stay shut off for a day or two.

Then I will turn it back on for the week (warming trend) then that will be the end of feeding for the season. I will not be around to monitor activity so will just shut it down. It is usually around this time of year anyway.

Still surprised to see a few CC sheepishly feeding. I never see the big ones like I did a few weeks ago. But the foot long ones are still getting a few pellets.

I hand feed some of the lmb and hsb at the pond most days so I get an idea on how many and size of the ones that come to the feed. I feed at the same place where the TH feeders are and so I usually get a good idea on the numbers and size of the cnbg that hang around the feeding area. I noticed yesterday the hsb are hanging at this one feeder 24/7 and it seems like the large sized cnbg have moved out. There are some 6" cnbg there but the larger ones have disappeared from the feeding area. I'm not sure if the hsb pushed them out or the cnbg have moved into deeper water where I can't see them. Not sure what is going on and wonder if the large school of hsb pushed the large cnbg out of the feeding area or the winter weather moved them into deeper water.

Algae bloom is finally going away some , water clarity went from less than a foot to close to 2 now so maybe I can do a little catching instead of just fishing

Pat, must be nice to have open, fishable water. We've got 1" of ice-too thick to fish through; too thin to walk on.

Today we watched a great blue heron stalk over the 1/4 acre of icy surface. What was extra satisfying was seeing the bird make a couple of stabbing attempts. 1" of ice protects the fish perfectly well. Go away, bird.

Added 200 lb RBT today. Water check pH 7, alkalinity 48, hardness 34. A little low on hardness, but not enough to lime again quite yet. Good water color, maybe 30 to 35 inches viz.

So quiet. I forget how peaceful it is out there sometimes!

Another one bites the dust! Otters are not so cute when you figure out how many pounds of fish they eat per day.

And Frank, are you ok with telling of how much per fish to stock the 200 RBT? And as you watched the release of the trout can you estimate the numbers of each size of trout stocked? example might be something like 100 4" and 100 8" etc? How many per acre? I'm ok if you don't want to post up the cost, so maybe send information on PM like cost and where did you get the trout and did you have to order ahead of time, like last Oct for an order?

Tracy, I'm guessing 1 pound average on the larger trout, so that would be 100 of them in 100 lbs. The 100 lb of smaller forage trout probably average 1/6 lb, so there were about 600 of them.

Big trout were for winter fishing & maybe some would be food for larger LMB, I have a number now that could easily swallow a 1 lb RBT. Fusiform shape helps.

Smaller trout are to help feed smaller LMB now that TP are done. I was told that they will grow an inch or two monthly if regularly fed, so by May should reach 8 to 12 inches. They should help feed bass until TP are stocked again.

Pricey, though, for a fish that does not reproduce & won't survive summer. Overtons transported from Missouri. Probably average around $4-5 per fish, including transport. Smaller RBT are more expensive per pound, but less per fish.

Apparently RBT do better NOT conditioning to pond water in their tank. Just put in them in BOW directly, which surprised me. But they seemed to do fine, only a very few small ones seemed distressed at all.

Frank, Thank you for the information. I'm on the edge when it comes to RBT stocking. Please keep us informed as to what you see this year when it comes to all things related to your stocking. And if you can maybe a picture or two of the trout you catch this year. I'm sure your family and friends will enjoy the memories of catching trout from your lake.
